Hello Dear Bees,
I have the dress (Justin Alexander 8609), but I’m having trouble figuring out where to buy it! I’m based in NYC and my mother is based in Morristown NJ, so we would love to keep it close to one of us.
Store #1 in Morristown: Very pleasant experience, the place where I found the dress. However, they were VERY non-responsive when I was calling to ask about pricing/logistics for buying extra yards of material to create a detachable train. Two months went by with very confusing conversations before I had to make the trip there in person to discuss it. Price: 1600 + 200+ (stil don’t know exactly!) for two yards of the organza+lining. They have high ratings from other brides online, though.
Store #2 in Bayone: Farther away from both mother and me, and I have never been there. But they are charging ONLY 1100 for the dress, plus 110 for two yards of the organza+lining. That’s $600 in savings! The man on the phone was very nice, although he had some negative reviews years ago. (They have since improved.)
Am I crazy to buy a dress that I know that I want from a store that I’ve never been to for $600? My thinking is that savings will cover the cost of making the detachable train!
NOTE: I am not getting alterations done in either one – I have a private seamstress that I work with for formal events. I would literally only be buying the dress and picking it up. ALSO – my wedding is in September so time is not an issue.
Thank you for all your help!!

You have the option of saving $600 – and you’re debating it??? How is this even a question?
I can see going with the more expensive neighborhood store if the difference were very small … but, $600?!?!

if the closer store does not match the price of the cheaper store, i know where i’d be going.
have you checked to see how flexible the closer store is on price?

@KCKnd2: I completely agree! My mom and sister are freaking out that I will be creating more trouble than it’s worth by bying from an ‘unknown’ place.. Or that they store #2 is somehow cutting corners to get me the lower price, etc, and that I will ‘get what I pay for’.
Has anybody else experienced such drastic price differences between stores?? PS I just had a third store quote me at $300 per yard for those two layers of fabric. (I’m pretty sure this is not real silk, PS.) I’m losing it! Is this cheap store going to sell me some dime store fabric in place of the real stuff?

@mypinkshoes: Good idea about the price matching.. I’ll going to approach the closer Morristown store next week to see if they will match the price, but I highly doubt it – they bill themselvs as a more upscale store, and I don’t foresee them cutting a third of the price. You never know though!

Try to get store #1 to match, but at this point…store #2 it is.

It’s the same dress, right? Tell the store in Morristown that you can get it for $1100. If they don’t match the price, no deal — buy from Bayonne!

My dress store would match any price I found elsewhere. I’d bring it up to them. They might be willing to match it

If your mom and sister are that insistent that you spend an extra $600 to go with the store they prefer … then I think you should very sweetly offer to let them pay the price difference!

A little late replying…but was the Morristownn store I Do, I Do? I had a similar issue with my Justin Alexander gown and was told they would match the better price I found ($800 less). I was super excited but now I can’t get them on the phone…a little worried they may have gone OOB. 🙁

Thanks guys for all your help! I got them to come closer to the price, and I’m happy I did. They warned me that the 1100 price was lower than the allowed threshold, and I got them to compromise at 1300. They also gave me a pretty good deal on the extra materials and buttons I will be using for my detachable train idea.
In the end, I’m happy with my purchase. It’s counterintuitive, but they actually became nicer and more attentive to me AFTER I bought the dress. Go figure!
@HaveGroomWillTravel: It was I Do I Do. As I mentioned above, I think they’ve gotten MUCH better with their customer service recently. Maybe the fall was a big rush for them? I would talk to them about price, they might be flexible like they were with mine.
PHEW dress is OVER! Now onto the next million things..
