I am having an intimate.vintage, Wedding Brunch reception in the outdoor area of my LDS church. Due to the small, sweet, simple, and affordable nature of my wedding, I wanted a dress that reflected that. It was difficult for me to find an affordable dress that was modest and white. finally, i thought i found the right one.
I bought a white sundress from jessica London via Amazon.com. The dress was about $45, but wiht tax and shiiping I payed about $60. Due to my faith, and my general discomfort with my arms anyway, I needed to cover my arms. Luckily, I thought, I have a white bolero. Problem solved!……
I received my dress yesterday, and it looked nice until I put it on. I felt so not pretty. I am not used to wearig loose fitting clothing, as tighter fitting clothing seems to look better on me. I also tend to wear daarker colors. So i kind fo expectd I might not feel super great about it. But I think it looks just awful. specially with the Bolero! I cried for 2 hours afterwards.
I was thinking of altering it. I thought I might add Taffeta uder it, and see if a seemstress could add sleeves, but due to the “racerback”, I’m not sure that’s possible. I am also thinking of adding somethign under my boobs, something wide to sinch the waist.
At this point, my alterations might make it so that I might be spending as much money as buying a nicer vintage style dress…maybe more.
What do you think bees? Should I return the dress and get a new one? or should I alter it?
If youthink I should get a new one, have any suggestionsof modest dresses in my size 24 dress size?

If you hate it, I would return it and find something you like better. I wouldn’t spend that much on alterations.
What about something like this that falls from the bust?

@julies1949: To bee honest, that seems frumpier than the dress I have now. The more I look at the dress, the more I think the problem is the bolero.

I think it looks really good, honestly! I like the bolero with it, too. I’m not really sure what you don’t like about it – is it the fit? Do you want more embellishment or something fancier? I wouldn’t add a belt because I think it would look funny with the empire waist of the dress, but you could dress it up beautifully with some sparkly jewelry and nice heels!
At the end of the day, though, if you don’t love it and you’re not comfortable in it, I think you should return it and keep looking. You should definitely feel beautiful on your wedding day! What other styles are you interested in and what’s your budget?

I have to agree – don’t spend money altering a dress when you can return it and get something you like better. What about something along these lines:

I agree that if you hate it, return it. There are lots of options for afforable, white, modest dresses! If you’d like, I could help you look.
FWIW, I don’t think you look awful in it. In fact, I think it’s adorable!

@MsMindle: I love love the dress you posted!! OP, I think this dress would look great!

I like the dress! I think it fits well and flatters you! I think the problem is the bolero, as you said.

the bolero is too boxy. Get a thinner one made out of a stretchy lace and you’ll be perfect

Yeah I agree the problem is the bolero, its too baggy, something tighter would look great! The dress is adorable, what about a blingy type sash belt to go around the waist I think it would look stunning and give it that wow factor you think its missing…..

I think your dress is very pretty but if you don’t like it, absolutely return it. I took a quick look on Macys’ website and found these two but I’m not sure what your budget is.
This one is on sale for $89.99 and comes in a 22, which might fit depending on your the cut (they provide a size chart with measurements).
This one is $178 and comes in a 24. It has the flutter sleeves so you may not have to wear a bolero.

In the picture you don’t look happy at all. Breaks my heart. I think you should return it. I really like the dress that MsMindle posted!!!! I think that would look beautiful on you 🙂
I hope you find something you love. Dont settle for something you dont like.

I don’t think it is that bad…I would recommend added a tule slip underneath to give it a little volume and maybe a sash of some sort to break it up. But still keeping it simple. If not then I would recommend a different dress you will feel comfortable in. I understand as I am a plus size 18 and know how difficult dresses can be.
sorry small image…http://www.torrid.com/torrid/Clearance/Dresses//White+Voile+Embroidered+Hem+Dress-547929.jsp’ defer=’defer try torrid…it’s sleevess as well but has the cute flower at the waist to bring some definition. And marked down to $60….

I think I will replace the bolero and see how i feel about it then. Thank you all for responding. Sometimes a girl just needs to share a freak out!
Just for fun, I want to share my dream dress. I saw it on Ruffled, and her mother made the dress so It’s not like I can buy it. But I fell instantly in love. I wish i could sew!
