From what I understand, the issues Mexico is having is near border towns. Cancun is much further south.

My Future Mother-In-Law wants to gift us a honeymoon to Cancun. Honestly, if you take your parents to the U.S foreign affair website (that is where they have all the travel advisories for countries) you would be shocked to see all the warnings for every popular honeymoon destination, except for the ones in the states of course. Go where you want to go.

Especially if you are paying for it yourselves.

Anywhere in the carribean…I just did a search on bookit.com from June 12 to June 18th, all inclusive to Aruba for about 2500. You can find really great deals on that site. You just have to search around a little bit and decide where you want to go

Cancun is safe, or as safe as you can get travelling internationally these days 🙂 As long as you stick near the resort areas you will be fine!! I have a very good friend who is Mexican. He said nothing bad is happening in his town or near Cancun, it’s all in Mexico City and up near the border towns!

Your parents are right to be upset.

I grew up on the TX/Mexico border (litereally a few miles from the international border) and we used to go to Mexico ALL THE TIME (as in a couple times a week) and travelled further into the interior of Mexico at least monthly.

There’s NO WAY I’d go into Mexico right now, and even my friends with family in Mexico have not travelled there in quite some time.

Yes, the violence used to be fairly isolated to the border.  But it has spread further South and into some traditionally tourist areas.

Will you get caught up in the mess if you go?  Most likely not.  However, if you can change… try.  Better to be safe than sorry, right?

We went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and it was beautiful. At no time did we feel unsafe. We’re returning for our anniversary in the fall. You take a risk no matter where you go, just keep your wits about you and chances are better than likely that you’ll be fine.

I love Mexico and I go several times a year.  The locals know they rely on tourists for their income so they go to great lengths to keep it safe.

The situation at the border and other cities is completely different from what you will find in the Cancun/Playa/Tulum area.

You obviously need to feel safe where ever you choose to go.  However, I know i am at greater risk when I step out of my front door living in the city than I am when I am in Cancun.
