I’m newly engaged and about to embark on what I hope will be a pleasant experience. After reading many of the blogs in the full figured section, I’m not even sure if I want to go to David’s Bridal. Seems like it will be a waste of my time. I have searched many websites and so far there is one dress that I really really LOVE! Its by Aurora D‘Paradiso. I wish there was a place where I could try it on. I really don’t want to do the mail order thing. But I have yet to see any other dress that comes anywhere near this dress in its beauty. Help! My street dress size is a 26-28 however don’t let my size fool you. I am a 22-24 on top and a 26-28 on the bottom. Yep you guessed it, a classic Pear shape. I have a relatively small waist and considerable boobs. My bridesmaids are all big girls too with varying shapes. Can anyone help?

I would go try on some similar dresses to this (maybe print out this pic) and if the styles look fabulous and you can’t find it – then you’ll be safe to order it somewhere. I’d even try David’s Bridal because they have the greatest range in sample sizes. I’m a street size 16 and I could only try on a few samples at regular bridal salons. I didn’t get my dress at DB, but its good to actually try on different styles.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi there! I think I might have seen a similiar dress somewhere. You should definetly try The White Gown in brooklyn. I ordered my dress there and they have a number of plus size dresses to try :). Let us know how it worked out!

It wouldn’t hurt to go to DB and just try on different styles to see what looks good on you. I was dead set on a mermaid style gown and HATED it when I tried it on. You don’t have to get your dress there, but since there are a lot of samples, you could get an idea for what looks good.
I’ve heard the one in Queens is better than the Manhattan one.

I live in a small town and know that plus size gowns are available at the small town bridal shops to try on… I wouldn’t go to DB. They will completely stress you out and make you think that nothing else is available. I’m sure that you can find plenty of places to try out gowns in NYC beyond DB.

I went to DB and purchased my dress there. At the time, it was a plus size. They were actually super nice to me, much nicer than any of the other true bridal salons. They were not pushy at all and were very patient with me. The other salons I went to actually made me feel fat. There is something about a size 2 sales clerk using what looks like jumper cables to hold up a size 6 dress on your ovbiously not-a-size-6 body to make you want to cry. But that was just the experience for me. I have heard a lot of women that did not have a great experience at DB.

I’m a plus-sized bride as well and live in NYC. I went to DB but I hated all the dresses, the material and nothing fit me great. No offense to other DB Brides but that just wasn’t my style and the people there made ME feel huge and very unhappy.
Right after, I went to RK Bridal and I found several dresses I loved! I just ordered one. They have a pretty good plus-size section at any style you want. I ordered a mermaid style one because that fit my body best. It’s on 39st between 8th & 9th I think. Google them. At least you’ll get the chance to try something on! Glinda helped and she was an awesome little old lady with no hairs on her tongue!

Try Alfred Angelo. I am plus size to and they have a dress that looked beautiful on me. I have a 24 top and 26 bottom this dress was perfect hid everything perfectly. Also get some spanx.

I second both the White Gown in downtown Brooklyn (they are SOOOOO nice and helpful and I was truly amazed at their selection in terms of designers and sizes), and RK Bridal (a little more self service, a lot busier, but my experience with the consultants has been great and the prices are even greater!). Maggie Sottero, Blue by Enzoani, Alfred Angelo and Ella Bridals all make great dresses for us plus sized gals!

Thanks Ladies. I actually called RK bridal a few weeks ago. Just trying to find time to go there. I have called around and was very discouraged until I called RK bridal. One shop told me they “didn’t have room” for plus size dresses in the store. But he would be MORE than happy to measure me and order something nice in my size. I was horrified. I’ll keep you posted and let you know what happens when I visit there.

I’m happy to report that I had a wonderful experience at RK Bridal. They have a HUGE selection of plus size dresses to try on. They are located in the middle of the store in the “Diva” section. I tried on about 12 dresses! The lady who helped me was sooo nice and very patient with me. She was still nice even when she found out that my wedding isn’t until 2012. I found a dress that I adore. I still have a lot of tiime so I will be shopping around a bit. I told them about my Aurora D’Paridiso dress that I’m in love with and they are going to look into it. They said they may have a few of these in the store. Perhaps not my dress…but maybe they can order a sample. I felt like a bride to be today. I tried not too, but I had tears in my eyes when I saw myself in those dresses. I fully expected to walk in the store and not find a single dress in my size. Well let me tell you….that was not the case. I will definitely be making another trip to RK Bridal. I totally recommend it to everyone.
Next stop…David’s Bridal. I’ll keep you posted. (I have to try out the White Gown too) Thanks everyone!

So I finally made it to David’s Bridal. I went to the one in manhattan. I went on a Sunday with no appointment. Big mistake…lol. In any event, the lady who was signing everyone in was extremely helpful and she made sure that we were aware that there would be a long wait since we didn’t have an appointment. She pointed out that there were 4 people who had 1:30 appointments and that we would be called only after they were taken care of. So after about an our of waiting, my sister inquired about when we might be called. She suggested that we go grab some lunch and come back. She ensured us that we would not lose our place. Well we went to a pizza shop directly across the street and sat for about 30 mins or so. When we came back, we were called like 5 mins later. Moral of the story…make an appointment or be prepared to wait for a long time. From what I understand, even ladies with appointments were waiting, but not as long as us.
So in the lady who helped us asked me a bunch of questions, my size if i had any particular style in mind. I told her it would be easier to tell her what I didn’t like. I did so and she told me she would be back. After about 5 mins, she helped me get into my corset and I put on a poof slip. The first dress she showed me was coincidentally the very first dress I ever looked at on David’s Bridal.com. I absolutely Adored the dress. Much to my surprise, the size she brought was actually too big so we went down a size to a 24. I was shocked. I tried on 2 more and didn’t like those. Then She went back and brought a few dresses in size 24 that I had pointed out in the catlogue. one of them I hated. The other was like a dream. Overall I had an awesome experience. I didn’t have high expectations for DB after some of the things I have read on this site and others. But I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not sure if I have found MY DRESS, but I’m happy to report that I was pleased with the selection that they had availiable. Because it was busy, I only had an hour (eventhough the lady was with me for about 90 mins) I will definitely be going back to try on a few more dresses very soon.
Next Stop. Gowns by Louise in the Morris Park section of the bronx.

Hi. Read retreadbride thread from Bristol, PA. in full figure. How far would that be from NYC? I would take a ride to her hridal shop. It would be well worth it. She looks fantastic in the the gown and the price of alternations seems wonderful, too.
