This one is easy, call her and ask for the tracking number.  If she can’t give you a valid one, tell her you will stop by to pick up the CD.

Your friend’s wedding was a YEAR ago and she still doesn’t have her wedding album or CD? Wow. My cousin got married in November (of this year) and already has both. I would definitely have her give you the tracking number.

Something just seems really fishy.

Ask her for a tracking number,  if she cant provide one,  that means she hasnt sent them.

this is bad form.

and what is worse,  is that she would post them on Facebook!

i NEVER  post wedding images on Facebook!  i give 2 discs,  one with full resolution images with printing rights,  and another disc with re-sized images for you to use for the internet  etc.  that way they can post on facebook,  but i never do that myself.

Like user876  said,  tell her you will collect the c.d.  or better still,  dont tell her,  and turn up anyway.  chances are she will try and fob you off, telling you they are in the post, when in reality she hasnt sent them.  stand firm and tell her you want a copy RIGHT NOW!

this makes me so cross,  it really gives our profession a bad name.

it can however be a two-way thing.  i photographed a wedding in July,  and as they were short of money, i told them they could pay half before the wedding,  and the other half when they were ready to order their album.  I have been in contact with them constantly and they say they havent yet chosen their pictures,  BUT  i know thats not true because i spoke to the bride 4 weeks ago and she said she was ready to order,  and would let me know when i could pop around for the remaining half they owed me.  Chances are they are stalling because its christmas next week, but its christmas for me too and i was banking on receiving that money….they DO  owe me it after all and i did them a big favour….they owe me £500!

my guess is they will keep me hanging on until after christmas,  and thats just not fair.  that wasnt the deal we made. PLUS, if they never contact me again,  ok they wont get an album but they have already got the disc,  and could make an album themselves, and i have shot their wedding for half price!

so its not only the photographers that mess people around,  i have had some pretty nighmare clients too.

What does your contract specify regarding shipping times?  Ever photographer handles post production at different speeds, and being faster than the next guy may not always be a good thing.  For example I deliver on average in 4 weeks, but I also go through and do retouching.  People who process their work very quickly may not be spending that sort of time removing blemishes and stuff like that.  Whatever the workflow for the photographer is, it should be clearly spelled out in the contract and talked over in the initial meeting.  They also should be delivering things when they say they are.  If it were me I’d check with the wording in the contract, and use it when you contact them again.  Try the nice approach first, but if that doesn’t work your contract should legally protect your interests.  And you always wield the power of reviews.  A good photography business should be built from good word of mouth referrals!
