I’m in a flap about the alterations to my wedding dress! I bought it abroad and it needs to be fitted to my lower back. It has two layers of lace and a lining with a central seam down the back and on the sides and a zip fastening. To fit it, the dress maker wants to put two darts above my rear to shape it but now I’m worrying that this isn’t the way to do it on a wedding dress.
She seems to have a lot of experience and assures me that they’ll lie flat and should get lost in the lace but some reassurance or advice from some of you would make a big difference to my stress levels!!

If she’s an experienced seamstress and you trusted her with your dress in the first place, then I’m sure it will be fine! I know it can be nerve wracking trusting your wedding dress with someone, but if it’s not how you want it to be in the end I’m sure she will fix it and make it perfect. 🙂

@cywed: I don’t think so, but I am no professional seamstress.
Do you have any photos of your dress (or any links)? The visibility of the darts depends on the construction of the lace and the shape of the dress, but it really shouldn’t be a problem.
Like PP said, if she’s experienced, then she’s been doing this for awhile, and thus would have a more professional eye for this sort of thing. And I’ll leave you with this ridiculous comment I found: “Back darts are so great. If you don’t like back darts you probably just don’t have a toned lower back like I do.” 😀

Ladies, you’re super!
Just to know that it’s not unheard of has put my mind at rest and you’re quite right, I should just let her get on with her job and chill out a bit!
MlleFabuleux, that quote’s made my day . It will be ringing through my ears when I go for my fitting!!
Thanks again for the feedback xx

Darts make curves! She just wants to make sure your butt gets the pampering it deserves

It should be fine…darts are the only way to shape a garment to your curves correctly!

I agree with everyone… the dart should help form the dress your body best, and really accentuate it. The lace will lie over the darts and they won’t even be noticed!
