My apologies, I should have been more clear about the fact that if we got a natural diamond, we’d be buying it secondhand 🙂

I have an Amora Gem. Love it. I don’t necessarily pass it off as a diamond but most people assume it is. No one has ever asked, though I would be honest about it as I think it’s awesome!
It’s really sparkly. It’s hard to capture in photos, but here are some different angles/lighting of my stone.
for some reason my phone won’t let me upload picture here’s the link to my e-ring post
Go with Moissanite it is so beautiful. That’s what me and my fiancé went with this dealer on eBay has a lot of pretty rings at good prices. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-00CTTW-MOISSANITE-ENGAGEMENT-RING-/291054518464?pt=Loose_Gemstones_1&hash=item43c43380c0
or lord of gem on etsy and the are also on eBay.
Hmm honestly I thought I always wanted yellow gold but when I started looking around I changed my mind and decided for platinum instead since it is more rare… not saying she will change her mind too but who knows? Although yellow gold and second hand diamond is totally in your budget too! My only advice is to listen to what she wants and get her what she likes you can’t go wrong that way!
If she prefers yellow gold, buy yellow gold. Odds are her jewelry is mostly yellow gold and she wants to coordinate.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to pass moissanite off as a diamond, but she will be able to quite easily. I think my moissy is obviously not a diamond but everyone is surprised when I tell them.
Mine is an unenhanced 7.5mm cushion from Moissanite Co. 2.2 carat equivalent. It’s huge and I don’t think it looks fake at all, other Bees might disagree =P
for diamonds, check out ENCHANTED DIAMONDS.
They are so helpul and work with you within your budget to find THE best stone for your money. Here is a review on them and how much you save using them over blue nile or whiteflash or other sites.
I just bought a 2 carat round from them and couldn’t be happier! Joshua (CEO) and Jill (CSR) are amazing.
I think I’m in the ‘if she wants to pass it off as a diamond, get a diamond’ group. Craigslist, ebay, the diamond district if you’re close to NYC are all good places! And if you purchase it through paypal they have a protection plan so if your diamond isn’t what the seller advertised it as, you’ll get a refund. That way you can get it inspected right away to make sure it’s authentic.
As for the color, if she said yellow gold that’s definitely what i’d do. my fiancé knew I liked white gold and platinum, and i would have been super surprised (in a not good way) to open a yellow gold ring box.
Another option entirely is to pick it out together. you can propose and follow that up with your desire to have her included with the decision making process, or have her included first then her not know when you’ll propose. Since you’re in a situation with the different option, that might be fun!
Also, you seem very sweet for putting so much effort into this!!
Here are some rings you might find interesting via Etsy.
And a few more…
And I thought I would add in this vintage star sapphire & diamond rings for good measure. I don’t love the very blue sapphire/yellow gold clash, but that’s not what is happening here. Stunning.
if you are going with diamond, Cut should be your most important C. A grey, poorly cut, heavily included diamond will not look good. A diamond that has good sparkle and brilliance will appear bigger.
With that being said, i would probally go the moissy route with your budget. Will definately have the sparkle factor, and mindclean for you.
Good luck!
You said carat is the most important C to your girlfriend. If that’s true, moissanite is definitely going to be your best choice. The Amora Gem is outside your price range, and $800 won’t get you a decent, sizable diamond. Look at the Forever Brilliant or Amora moisasanites (different from the Amora Gem). Either will easily pass as a diamond and you can get a gorgeous, decent-sized stone in your price range. A previous poster said the Amora moissanite is a coating, that is false. The Amora moissanites are moisasanites which have been pre-screened for cut and color, then heat treated in a way that makes them permanently stronger and whiter. No coating involved, and they are graded by an independent lab.
I recommend moissaniteco.com or betterthandiamonds.com. Also consider diamondbistro.com, you can find amazing bargains on pre-owned moissanites there.
