Jewel814:  Depending on your budget, you can find a formal dress at Macy’s, JCP and Nordstroms. You should be able to find some good deals.

Just check the sales racks at the department stores… winter/christmas formal dances should have been recent and so all the stock left over for those should be on clearance.

H&M just added a more formal selection to their inventory and it’s actually really nice. I would take a look there.

Lots of sales going on right now, so it should be a great time to find something with all of the sales going on! But yeah, I’d check out Express, The Limited or a department store and see what they have.

I’d check craigslist or ebay if you know a style that is good for your body type.  You could get a steal if its local.

Since you’re in Chicago, definitely go to Nordstrom Rack! It’s a gold mine!

I know Filene’s Basement closed but there are other discount stores that sell high end/good brands at highly marked down prices!

Have fun with it–you might find some amazing deals!

I think most long black dresses can look formal with the right accesories. I would look for a black dress.

Cache also has a ton of dresses and isn’t too pricy.

Jewel814:  I second Nordstrom Rack. Nordstrom also has a big sale going on right now. The nice thing about getting an inexpensive dress is that you always can have a tailor shorten it to a cocktail dress after the wedding if you want to.

Where is the wedding at? I have all long dresses here, but if the venue isn’t a super fancy hotel or similar, you probably could get away with a glitzy cocktail dress as well.

The above dresses are all in stock at the Nordstrom on Michigan Ave. The ones below are from Rack online, you can call to see if they have in-stock at any area stores.

Nordstrom Rack. There are also a couple Saks Off Fifth around.

Also, just thought I should mention that renttherunway is amazing, super fast and will send you two sizes.

does it have to be a gown? Are knee-length cocktail dresses acceptable?
