Our venue has a lovely pool area. Originally I really wanted floating candles but since it’s a destination wedding, we’ve decided that the logistics of floating candles are a nightmare (they gather together in clumps unless you attach anchors, and we really don’t have time to craft and attach little anchors to each candle).
Did anyone come up with an elegant lighting solution for their pool area that wasn’t expensive? Glass is a no-no in case it breaks and gets into the pool. I like the idea of lining the pool with lanterns but they are all glass! Same with hurricane vases which would look beautiful as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You can make a floating pillow of flowers and place candles on it.

You can place a glow stick inside a balloon and blow it up.

@julies1949: Thank you so much for the suggestions!
We want to steer clear of anything that floats in the pool because it/they won’t stay in place when you factor in the wind in Hawaii.
And even though I love to DIY, it’s just not realistic with a destination wedding (we can order things online and send them to my wedding coordinator but they need to be ready-made).
The light starship is really cool but doesn’t go with the rustic/vintage vibe we’re after. I would totally use it if we were having a party vibe though! 🙂
I should mention that the pool itself has lights in it so something decorative/whimsical to line the outside of the pool would be ideal.

You could do luminarias with white or kraft paper bags. Use a paper punch to make a nice design around the top, or glue paper doilies inside the bag for a lace effect. Fill 1/2 way with sand to keep them stable and use and use a battery operated tealight, or a battery operated LED light depending on how bright you want the light.

@julies1949: Great idea! These luminaries are definitely a good option 🙂
