Our caterer offers either a mashed potato bar or a pasta station at cocktail hour. The mashed potatoes are served in a martini glass, with your choice of toppings (bacon, chives, sour cream, etc.) and the pasta station gives a choice of two pastas, served on plates. Which would you like more at a wedding as a guest? I can’t decide!

I feel like (in the online wedding planning world) mashed potato bars are really trendy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’d definitely prefer the potatoes regardless because I love the kinds of toppings people have to put on them.

me and my FI love pasta, and hes Italian and we talked about a pasta bar but when I took him to my first bridal show all he kept talking about was how amazing the mash potatoe bar was(there was a full mash potatoe bar at one of the caterers booths with samples), go figure lol. I dont eat potatoes but I think the mash potatoe bar would be more fun and easier to carry around then a plate 🙂

I have been to a wedding where they had a mashed potato bar and it was a hit. It is something unexpected and different. It is a major plus that it is served in a martini glass!

You just said two of my favorite things… so … Both? Both is good! 🙂

My cousin had a mashed potato bar. The potatoes were kind of not warm and sort of slimey, like in an instant potato kind of way. And I have tasted some ahhmazingly good instant mashed potato recipes, so I’m just saying give your caterer some feedback during the tasting.
I’mleaning toward a pasta station if we do a full meal.

We had a mashed potato bar – knowing it was trendy, but also knowing we have over 2 dozen vegetarians in our midst. It was a huge hit. Other than the band, its the wedding “thing” people have brought up the most since.

I love mashed potatoes, but potatoes and pasta both sound kind of heavy for cocktail hour. And to be honest, I don’t see the appeal of the martini glass. I’ve never been a fan of novelty just for novelty’s sake. There needs to be a reason to do something different, and I don’t see why a martini glass makes a better serving dish than a bowl. Don’t the potatoes make the glass top-heavy? I just don’t get it. It seems like it’s trying too hard to be hip.
But I do love mashed potatoes, and would eat them at a wedding, even from a martini glass.

Mashed potato bar!! Yumm. We are having one!

@Daisy_Mae: martini glass is perfect size for a big scoop. Works well so you don’t get too much as it can be heavy.

Anyone able to post a picture of their mashed potato bar?
