I’ve been to Cancun numerous times and have nothing but great things to say about it.  I’ve also stayed at a Riu (but not in Cancun, Riviera Maya).  My fi has been to both Cancun and Montego Bay, Jamaica and says that Cancun is a million times prettier and safer.

Is Riviera Maya out of the question? You should check out the Riu Palace Riviera Maya.  Fi and I went there 2 years ago and LOVED it.

Ive been to jamaica..at a different all inclusive resort… I would NOT recommend stepping off the resort. My best friend is from Mexico and has been to Cancun many times and loves it..but states that its very touristy.. this might be a good thing for some! 🙂

I vote for Cancun because I hear that once you step off the resort in Jamaica, it’s really unpleasant and *feels* unsafe. Having never been there myself though, I can’t say how true that is.

Cancun is lovely (albeit toursity), and you can walk around in and out of the resort while feeling safe. It’s also cool because you can take day trips, such as to the Mexican pyramids, which are awesome.

Yes I agree with PP’s about Jamaica.  As soon as you step off the plane it feels unsafe. We stayed in Montego Bay and the resort was great, Beaches, but I wouldn’t go back.  We went for my nieces DW(she won the entire package) and everyone that went agreed that we wouldn’t be going back.

I don’t know when the PPs went to Jamaica, but I went when I was 14 with my parents and I never felt unsafe. We went on bike rides. We went to see rich and poor parts of the country with a driver and he took us to his favorite jerk stand. I loved it there and wish I could go back. If you are near Kingston, it might be troublesome, but Ocho Rios and Montego Bay are more than fine.

I wouldn’t go to Cancun. I have never been, but it just seems overdone and too touristy for me. Plus it screams Spring Break rather than honeymoon. But there are I’m sure a million resorts that are less college kids and more romantic.

I don’t ever hear great things about Jamaica, and as for Mexico, I still dont find safe enough to travel/visit within!

@CupCakeMeg: Cancun can actually be safer than Orange County. All of Mexico is not having a drug war. 🙂

We’ve spent many family vacations in Cancun – with the youngest being a newborn and the oldest being 80. The beach is incredible. It’s touristy yes but all beach towns are. Flying in and out of Cancun is a breeze and we’ve always felt safe traveling here -even in this new “climate” – the drug war is not tolerated in Cancun as there is so much corporate developement here. There are many many American stores here so if your family isn’t into the site seeing, there are always the shopping malls.

I’ve never been to Jamaica but we went to Cancun a few years ago and loved it.  We didn’t stay at one of the resorts and instead stayed at a small hotel and took lots of trips, Tulum, Chichen itza, Isla Mujures, Xcaret, playa del carmen, cozemel (forgive my mis-spellings)  We only spent one day in Cancun itself which was about enough.

I have been to both places and I can honestly say that cancun is better.

When we went to Jamaica, we were so bothered by the “sand fleas” that were EVERYWHERE. They ate up our ankles.

In cancun, we had no proble at all. The sand in cancun is a little coarse so we spent more time by the pool rather than the beach. Take aqua socks lol

All in all, the good outweighs the bad in cancun 😀 good luck!

I work for DOD and I’m not allowed to travel to Mexico for security reasons.  I’ve been to DR and it was kind of sad to see the state of island when not on a resort.  I’ve been to the Bahamas, and absolutely love it. I’ve never been to Jamaica.

    I vote for Bahamas!

I have been to Jamaica and Cozumel, Mexico and they were both beautiful. The only concern I would express with Mexico is that the crime has taken over the country and is beginning to find its way into tourist cities.

    *Punta Cana is VERY nice!

@areagan4: I personally didn’t enjoy the Dominican Republic, but I also didn’t go to Punta Cana, which I hear is lovely. I think as long as you stay on the resort, you’ll probably enjoy yourself but I found the part of the island I went to (in and around Sant Domingo) to be depressing for a variety of reasons. I would not go during the “wet season” if you can, since the humidity there is pretty intense (unless you like humidity, then go for it).

As for crime in Mexico, I feel that for the most part, the crime that is depicted in the media only primarily affects the people invovled in the drug trade. As long as you are a smart traveller you shouldn’t have any problems.  I have a girl friend who lived in Mexico City by herself for 3 months and was absolutely fine.
