My ring and I have been very happy together for almost 3 years now, but a few weeks ago I was taking her off to do the dishes (in an attempt to be careful) and dropped her. I’m not a very careful person (one of the reasons I got a bezel), and I’d dropped her many times before, but I guess this was at just the wrong angle. She cracked on the side (the stone, not the band) and I need to get a replacement stone.
This is all well and good, but though I love the ring we picked out, not I’m not sure if I should make any changes or simply get the same stone and have it replaced. I have a moissanite and have been completely happy with it, so I’ll definitely be getting another one. At least that’s decided. The other things I’m considering are:
Size: I have a .75 (6mm). My finger is about size 5.5 I believe, and according to the charts that it somewhere around 38% finger coverage. There is a partial bezel, which provides a little more. When we were shopping I felt like a carat was going to be too big for me. I’m a simple person, very active, and I have pretty small fingers. Now I think I could maybe do a carat (6.5mm), and I feel like if I’m going to do it now is the time. I’m worried I’ll decide it is too big. I went to the jewler we work with and compared a carat to my current moissanite, but it’s hard to say outside of the ring.
Here is my ring on for scale to my hand:
And here she is up closer:
Shape: When we were ring shopping I thought really seriously about getting a horizontal oval stone. I first fell in love with this watching the Time Traveler’s Wife in high school, so I’m not sure it’s the best way to make a decision. Also, I feel like the bezel does it give it some of the oval feel I like and I wonder if it would to too ovally for me with an oval and a bezel… One plus to the oval is that less of the stone would stick out of the bezel, and therefore more of it would be safer, which is obviously a good thing for me (this is also a con for getting a round carat, more of it would stick out than currently does).
Here is a horizontal oval in a setting similar to mine. It is 1.5 (8x6mm) carats, and I think I’d probably stick with closer 1 (7x5mm):
Enhanced vs. Unenhanced: My current stone is unenhanced and I love the color. I compared it to an enhanced stone at the jewlers and couldn’t really tell a difference, so I’m not sure about that.
As far as cost goes, we’re not too concerned about it. Of course I want to be frugal, and we don’t have insurance on it because I felt pretty secure in the bezel and a moissanite is so affordably anyway. They could just replace the stone for very cheaply. It would cost a little more to stretch the bezel to fit a carat, and about $200 more for a new bezel to fit an oval if I remember correctly.
