Hi bees
I’m excited to be getting my wedding dress custom made and currently trying to decide between a dutchess satin or a crepe material.
– The Dutchess Satin is a shiny, thick and a bit stiff type of material. This type of material is most probably what I’ve imagined wearing for a long time but I’m not a fan of how thick and bulky it can appear to be.
(Second image for example of dress style)
– The crepe (or stretch crepe called scuba) is beautiful quality and will fit beautifully against the body as in the images attached. I’m worried that I will miss the shiny/bridal look but also think the matte fabric is very elegant and will allow me to have sleeves.
(First image for example.)
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and feel free to share your gowns.

I prefer the shiny satin. I don’t care for the matte fabric as shown. It looks cheap even though I’m sure you’d pay a hefty price for it. Is there any other fabric your seamstress offers if you are looking for an alternative to the satin?

@gimmepretty: that’s a good point- thanks! I may need to look around for different satin fabrics. Both fabrics are similarly priced.

What season are you getting married? If it’s winter I’d go satin, summer crepe.

A summer wedding. Have you considered a chiffon material?

I love satin. I almost bought a satin dress. It felt great in person, but when I looked back at photos, the shine made me look bulkier.
I love the look of crepe. It is so elegant. However, it’s known to be an unforgiving material if you have the slightest bulges.
I agree chiffon would be nice for a summer wedding.
You could always do a satin belt or accent.

I love the crepe. Shiny is beautiful too but the crepe just looks so so simple and sleek. For me shine and sparkle take away. With the crepe, you are the focus and jewelry pops against it.

I love how the first one looks on you. Both the style and finish of the fabric.

I prefer crepe for a lovely modern sleek look. Personal preference, but I’m not a big fan of satin, I associate it with being dated. It also wrinkles SO easily and the wrinkles really show. That said, crepe is less forgiving and will cling more, though maybe not in that cut.

I’m also going custom! My dress is a similar style to the off shoulder picture but it’s being made using crepe. I love how luxurious and soft the fabric felt and it also breathed a bit better in my experience (also having a summer wedding). I have gone for a thicker crepe because as a previous poster mentioned, crepe can be a bit unforgiving especially when its thin. My dress is being underlined and boned so the bodice is super structured like a satin but with the matte-ness of the crepe and the flowyness in the skirt.

Have you thought about mikado?

@gimmepretty: Yes, love chiffon although both bridesmaids are wearing chiffon dresses so I want something a little more structured.
@BuzzedBumblingBee: really lovely to get some perspective – thank you! Satin is gorgeous but quite popular so I’m almost leaning towards the crepe for something a bit different. Although the seamstress just told me this weekend that crepe is really ‘on trend’! I had no idea!
@noviaoctubre2020: that’s a really good thought, thanks!
@betyl: its not actually me in the pic but that dress is divine!!
@murmurings: it’s funny you say that you associate satin with been dated because my mum had those big, shiny, satin bridal gowns from the ’80s! haha The dressmaker is building a bodice / corset to go into the dress either way so it should help with making the dress look very smooth and hide the lumps and bumps!
@kenobee: oh! your dress sounds gorgeous! What is the style you are going for? Good point in having a thicker crepe. The material I have is fairly thick and she is making a lining to go underneath which should help also!
@zl27: I had to look up what Mikardo was! I’ll have to ask my dressmaker if she has any. That type of fabric looks gorgeous. Thanks for the tip!
