whytneynicole :  I would go for Germany in the winter and enjoy the Christmas markets etc and save Italy for another trip when the weather is a bit better. But that’s just me! I hope you enjoy the UK. I apoligise now for the rank December weather! lol

I agree with PP about Christmas markets.  Although the best Christmas one that I’ve ever been to was in Vienna (Austria).

If you were coming in the busy season (May to October) then I would personally recommend Italy and Greece but not in the Winter.

Germany hands down. I LOVE Germany it is a beautiful country and the people are so lovely. The Christmas markets will still be up at the start of Jan and they are great fun.

    It will be COLD – seriously COLD, but you can still walk around and visit lots. I have done a few road trips and places I would recommend below;

Berlin – so muh history, but also a very cool city

Hamburg – more industrial but there is a cool mini world there that is fun on a cold afternoon (I went here in Jan)

Munich – history and southern German charm

Nuremberg – loads of history and slightly less touristy than Munich

Baden Baden – lovely hot springs here which would be lovely on a cold day

You could hire a car and do a road trip to all of them.

I think the right answer to your question is: you will love anywhere you go in Europe.

I’ve been to many different countries and they’re all just amazing in their own right.  Everyone is absolutely correct in saying Germany is beautiful in the winter.  But Italy is just amazing all the time for food, history, culture, etc.

Really, you can’t choose poorly here. =)

If you can swing it so that you can be in Munich and/or Vienna before or around Christmas DO IT!! Christmastime in Austria and Germany is freaking magical and was one of the best experiences of my life! Just lights and decorations everywhere, Christmas markets on every corner.. the smells.. the sounds.. gahhhhh!! I’ve never been more in the Christmas spirit than I was in those two cities!!

Prague was also cool as hell. Definitely go on a guided walking tour there. Our guide was named Andre and his tour started from our hostel – St Christophers.

I’ve not been to Italy so I can’t speak to that at all. I’m sure it’s beautiful tho! My boss has traveled the  world and Italy is his favourite place.

Is there any way you could do this trip *before* visiting the parents, rather than on the way back? I don’t think the Christmas markets will be open after December 24.

Wanted to add, if you are into architecture, Prague is definitely a good choice because it’s such a Stark and interesting mix of styles. Very cool.

Also – if you want to see the Christmas markets in Germany/Austria you will need to go before Christmas.

Also – on that same trip my friends and I ended up in Amsterdam in early January andhappened to be there during their festival of lights, which was super cool. Totally unplanned but it was pretty neat. If you end up there during that time, take a canal tour.

I have been to Prague – you must do the bar crawl if you drink. It is SUPER AMAZING AND FUN. It is really packed in the first bar and there are LOADS of people but it is a great experience and they have an ice bar. SO COOL…pun intended.

Prague food and peoples are AMAZING. Je qui is how you say ‘thank you’. That’s all I remember tho.

Germany is also absolutely gorgeous. And Austria is fabulous as well.

    I want to go back!

i put some pictures here for you from our trip.

I love Germany. One of my favorite places to visit – especially around the holidays. Heidelberg and Wiesbaden are both great, beautiful cities. Christmas markets pretty much all close around the 24th but if you make it to them drink as much gluhwein as you can! Strasbourg on the German/French border is also amazing around Christmas time.

I voted Italy because I liked the food in Italy much more than the food in Germany and you said that you are foodies.  Germany would be really nice for Christmas markets though so I think you can’t go wrong.
