Okay bees, here’s the scoop. No engagement yet, but I promise you, I’m not jumping the gun! The man and I had a talk the other day and he informed me that he will propose with my mom’s ring and then we will go shopping together. I would happily just wear her ring but it’s 10kt gold and due to metal allergies I need 14 or 18kt gold. So our hope is to trade it in on something that I can wear. We also have a spare men’s gold band that I’ve considered getting made into something? I don’t really know how this stuff works though.
Due to my metal allergy, I’ve never been a jewlery girl. Oh sure, I have a few rings. Even a couple that I love, but I can never wear them long 🙁 I like to wear a couple of my mom’s precious stones that she gave me but they turn me green eventually so they always get nixed. So when he told me we were going to find something together, I kind of realized that I have NO idea what I want in an engagement ring!
This is my Mom’s, I think its beautiful. It’s small and simple but I like that. It’s a little bit too raised for me (I’m going to be working with kids so I don’t want to slice anyone! I would love something with a vintage touch, I like simple, but a touch of girly would suit me. It’ll be with a plain gold band (pictured as well) Sorry the picture is a cappy phone picture! It doesn’t do justice, but you get the idea. I’d like something sort of like but a bit different to (if you know what I mean!)
Any ideas ladies?

Green? Allergy? That sounds like a normal reaction to copper which is a common filler. Youll be guaranteed no arthritis in the finger wearing that!! i personally couldn’t bring myself to alter anything sentimental but if you can, maybe just a simple bezel set will suit your needs 🙂

Since you have trouble with most jewelry, have you considered platinum? It’s hypoallergenic. If you have trouble with gold it’s probably still going to pose a problem even at a higher gold content, maybe just not as fast. I would go with platinum. What is your budget? Do you want diamond or something else? Do you have any pictures of what you like? I was also going to suggest a bezel based on your description of what you might like.

If you are not sure what you are looking for (I wasn’t either) you should wait until you are shopping together and try on as many different styles as possible. This way you can discover what you like don’t like.

If you’re that sensitive, there’s a good chance you’ll get reactions from 14k and 18k gold. Platinum and palladium are less risky choices. As for ideas, just look at different ring designers, including Etsy, just to see what sort of designs are out there. You can always get something custom-made that’s low and comfortable that also has extra details you like.

I would recommend trying things on and finding a ring that fits with your lifestyle and personality without worrying about what other people will think of it.
I’m pretty simple, don’t usually wear jewelry, and I work in a lab so I am putting on and taking off gloves all day. I knew I wanted a ring I could wear every day that wouldn’t get in my way. When FI and I went ring shopping, I thought I wanted a low profile bezel set solitaire, but when I tried on solitaire style rings, they all felt too flashy for me (even at 0.25 carats- I know, I’m weird). After looking around online for a while, I realized what I really wanted was to have one ring that would be my engagement ring and wedding ring. I ended up getting a custom made platinum band with a small diamond set into it, and I absolutely love it. It fits into my life seemlessly, and it is very “me.”
Good luck with the search! I’m sure you’ll find something you love!

@lalalyanne: I suggest palladium. I got it because of my nickel allergy. To figure out your style, I would start looking at a lot of ring porn to get a general idea of what you want (type of center stone and stone cut, shank style, prongs, side stones, etc). Then try on a bunch of rings. Repeat this process until you have found the one! Worked for me.

@Chizzy: Yeah, its the copper. Well not just the copper. I’m allergic to a lot of things, most metals included. I basically can wear no jewlery except 14kt or higher gold. 14kt gold apparently has a high enough gold content that it doesn’t irritate my skin. 18kt would be ideal but that starts talking pretty rich. I saw a bezel in a thread that I LOVED. Megan Thorne maybe? My jaw literally dropped when I saw it. I had seen another one in the same thread, cmmented on the other one then saw the bezel and forgot about the bee, spent the next half hour googling it. Thanks for reminding me!
@BlondeMissMolly: I’ve worn 14kt gold plated earrings my whole life. As long as the plate doesn’t wear off, they don’t bother my skin. Even the hypoallergenic posts they sell tend to irritate me. Like I mentioned though, basically allergic to everything :-p As soon as the gold plate wears off, they’re done. I’ve never considered platinum because I’m pretty set on gold. As far as I understand, platinum is also rather expensive? We’re hoping to get away with doing this on as little a budget as possible. That ring is super pretty! I mentioned it above but I saw aMegan Thorne bezel in a thread and was floored. Loved it!
@abirdword: Thanks! I’m fairly certain that I’ll be okay with 14kt gold. I have a cousin with the same allergy and for some reason, 10kt is bad but 14 is okay. It seems that having over half gold content seems to be the key to preventing whatever the reaction is. Who knows why, but it is what it is! I honestly wish I wasn’t allergic so we could just call it a day :-p
@SleepyBee99: Thanks for your suggestions! When the time comes, I’m sure I’ll try lots on :-p I just want to go into this with some kind of idea of what I like so I don’t hve to drag him around too long ahaha
@ceebree: Thanks!! I’m going to look into palladium and platinum. I’m really interested in gld and now I’m curious!
We’re hoping to spend as little as possible. We have my Mom’s that we could either trade/use the diamond from and a solid gold band. I want to keep my Grandma’s band intact fr me (sentimental value) but I have a ring from my Mom that I love and will keep forever and this engagement ring isn’t really sentimental to either of us (it was from her first marriage, a man who I’ve met once and am not related to at all. Seeing as how she’s two men post that marriage, she’s just happy to get it out of the drawer and traded for something useful)
Thanks for your ideas!! I’m going to have a peek at some more bezel settings (not something I had really even looked at before yesterday) If anyone has any other ideas, throw’em at me.
