I’m already married but my little sister in law got engaged last week and needs to find a venue very soon for this Sept (which I know might be hard!). Her Fiance will be leaving for Japan at the end of Sept so it has to happen by then! I’m helping her look for some venues but I’m overwhelmed when I do a google search (I had a backyard wedding so I have no idea what I’m doing). She pretty much said she wants an ocean view venue (not literally on the beach, but more like a cliff with ocean view) or a vineyard either in Santa Barbara, San Diego or Orange County. Any suggestions?? Guest count will be around 75 and venue budget is around $5000.
Thanks so much!

@october22: Is that budget only for the space or also includes catering, seating, linens, etc?

Santa Barbara Montecito area would be really nice, although I am not sure of the pricing. About an hour north of Santa Barbara is Pismo Beach, Shell Beach and Avila Beach. They have some beautiful places such as the Cliffs Resorts, however I am not sure if that is to North for you. Good Luck!

@october22: Woah. That sounds almost exactly like my BFF. She’s having her reception in October with the same guest count and budget. I’ll be checking back for ideas for her.

Check out Palos Verdes for venues. It’s just north up the coast from Long Beach and provides dramatic cliff to ocean views. Also, there are some fantastic homes out there with gorgeous grounds that will rent out their facilities for events if your sister wants to get creative. I wanted to do this so much, but just for renting the house cost us more than what our total venue budget allowed.

Temecula is wine country, wedged between San Diego and Orange County. There are tons of options out there, and it’s gorgeous. Probably more affordable than the beach cliffside thing. Up north, the Los Olivos/Santa Ynez valley vineyards are pretty too, but I don’t know how set up for weddings they are, my impression from touring both and looking online at SoCal venues is that Temecula might have more options at all sorts of price points.
There are two beach-adjacent venues in San Clemente: Casa Romantica and Casino San Clemente, the former is on a cliff and the latter is across the street from the beach. Those should be at or near budget.
There are a few in Laguna Beach, too, there’s a place called Casa del Camino where there is a rooftop bar across the street from the beach (Real Housewives of OC is filmed there often, in case you’ve seen it), and you can dine either up there or in their restaurant, K’ya. A coworker also mentioned to me in my planning process that there is a place out in Laguna called Cliffside (restaurant, I think), and while I haven’t been there, the name indicates it might be relevant. 🙂
The Hyatt and Hilton hotels in Huntington Beach are across the street from the beach, don’t know about view.
Pelican Hill Golf Course in Newport is gorgeous and might have views, I’d be surprised if they didn’t (I’ve been but don’t remember).
There are also wedding cruises in Newport Harbor, that’s not in the parameters you gave, but they did my friend’s wedding pretty last minute and you can’t get closer to the ocean. 😉
Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions about OC, I’m planning a wedding there right now myself and have lived here for many years. 🙂

Is the $5000 inclusive of rentals or just the venue? For example, at some of the local OC venues that are not hotels but actual event locations, it’s doable at $5k (in offseason, most likely) but then it won’t include many rentals. I think she can get tables and chairs, but it won’t include linens, bar tables, etc.

@2BeeMrsE: Casino San Clemente
Another suggestion for this! My cousin got married there last March on a very tight budget and it was a nice venue. You are literally right across the street from the beach and can clearly see the ocean/sand from the venue. It is easy to walk over for photos after the ceremony (or before). It has a great area for the bride and bridesmaids to get ready too.

@dreams030684: Thanks! Yeah she mentioned those areas too but when I do a generic google search I get too overwhelmed with options. Do you know of any specific venues?
@MexiPino: Haha really?? Ya let me know if she finds anything! It’s hard!
@HisMoon: That would be gorgeous! I will google it. Yeah we were on a huge budget for our wedding too, so I know how u feel lol!
@2BeeMrsE: Thanks so much for all of your suggestions! She went to visit Temecula last weekend, she saw 4 venues but they were more like the $7000-$8000 range :/ I’m going to look up all of your suggestions right now and find pricing. Man, finding a venue is so much more work than I expected, especially with a tight budget!
@lilbluebird: It doesn’t have to include rentals but just food. Most of the places we’ve looked are more like $7000 including the food. Sheesh, this is hard!
@Treejewel19: Thank you! I just looked at the website, it looks really pretty! I’m going to email them right now and find out pricing. I hate how most venues don’t like pricing! Grrr lol 🙂

My Fiance is stationed in Japan so I’m just curious – is your sister’s Fiance military?
Yes, here are some specific venues:
The Cliffs Resort (Shell Beach)
Dolphin Bay (Shell Beach)
The Shore Cliff (Shell Beach)
Vantana Grill (Shell Beach)
Sea Venture (Pismo Beach)
The Custom House (Avila Beach)
The Biltmore (Santa Barbara – might be too pricey)
They all over look the beach or are right on the beach. Good Luck!

@october22: Well turns out she’s getting married in Cambria in June (almost an elopement- guests will just be parents, brothers & me!) and having a reception in October. They apparently decided to nix the beach location for October and are getting married at The Retreat in Corona. But it’s inclusive and $5k for 80. This is as of this weekend. Her Fiance is still convinced he can find something better. We’ll see.
If you could cut it down to 65, I would suggest Eclipse Chocolate in San Diego. They just moved to a new, bigger location in South Park and have this really cool dinning room that they can also set up as a ceremony space. When we went to the opening I had dreams of doing the ceremony, then moving out to the cafe area for cocktail hour (they make awesome mimosas and serve local wines & craft beer), then going back in for dinner. But my minimum list is 175 so….. 😛

@ThatOneGirl9613: yep! He’s in the marine corps. How about your FI?

@dreams030684: Thank you so much! So helpful! I’m going to look into all of those right now 🙂
@MexiPino: Awesome! I’m going to look into both of the places you mentioned right now. They both sound like really good locations for her. Thank you! I’ll let you know what we come up with!

@october22: Yes, he is Navy 🙂 Make sure she asks everyone if they offer a military discount! We have literally gotten a mil discount from every vendor – from our venue to my dress to the flowers. It has saved us so much. There are also a lot of bases down here in San Diego that have wedding venues and some overlook the beach/water.
Also, the Coronado Community Center has a gorgeous beach venue and since it’s a public area I’ve heard it’s really reasonably priced (especially considering how expensive everywhere else in Coronado is). You can google Coronado Community Center wedding ceremony or something similar and it should give you some pictures 🙂
