okay, well my budget is very tight. I am supposed to spend $400 max, Im not sure if a knock off dress is a good idea but I think it might be my only option?
I want a burgandy dress with a lace up back, Im “full figured”. If it is strapless I will add a bolero as I am not in love with my arms 😛
This is the first dress that I fell in love with:

I then moved on from that moment, and spent a couple of months stalking sites looking for good copies of this Pnina gown:

But I wanted it made in burgandy. Any ideas? Good quality low cost dress makers? Low cost stockers of similar dresses in Australia? I am also considering some burgundy quinceanera gowns as I love the enourmous ball gown shape and my wedding is going to be pretty untraditional anyways. ideas please? I dont know much about where to by quince dresses though as it is not a tradition that is followed here which means I would probably have to buy them online.

try http://www.lightinthebox.com I ordered a bridesmaids dress from them and it was great quality, just try to pick one that people have commented on to make sure and sometimes they post pics! they let you order it in whatever color you would like and have a lot of ball gown options for under $400, hope this helps 🙂

I also used light in the box ans was very pleased! I was nervous becuase they wouldn’t take a return but when I got it I was so happy!
PS the first gown is identical to mine but I am wearing white and the second dress is stunning! wonderful taste 🙂

I bought the maggie sottero winona dress in an incredible ruby color from weddingdressmart.com and it came out beautifully (they even put in pockets!). That being said, after reading all these reviews of the various chinese companies, i think it turned out so well because it is a very simple design. The dress, including shipping, was only about $200. Sorry I don’t have any pics of me in it, but picture this in red with a cream sash. I’ll try to put up pics when I have them.

Have you thought about looking at prom dresses? I found a few that are sort of similar from Deb.

oh I am going a little over budget though, with dress, underskirt and bolero it will be more like $550, oh well, it is my big day after all 🙂 it could be $12,000 if I had bought the original hehehe

Hmm things changed AGAIN! I ditched the Tasmanian dressmaker because she couldnt make my partners suit the way she wanted it and I started getting really nervous about using someone so far away, I found a local dress maker who is making my gown, my daughters flower girl dress and my fiances matching tailored pant suit in satin all for $950, not too bad though still over budget by a bit more as it does not include the hoops and bolero.
The budget seems to be expanding but we can accomodate it I think. (fingers crossed) also my family have offered to help with some of the catering cost, I hadnt wanted to ask them but they seem to really want to and it definately takes the pressure off 🙂

my first impression is that you are really going to be hard-pressed to get that much gown for under $400. that said, you can get quite a bit of dress for not too much money (probably more than $400, unless you want to go the chinese replica route…and for that much detail and complexity, i would not recommend it, personally).
have you checked this site out? supposedly they can do all their gowns in just about any color (they’ve got like 60 colors on their chart, including a few dark red shades). most of their gowns seems to be in the $600-750 range, which is a bit out of your price point but still quite reasonable.
here is their color chart. i would recommend going through ALL the dresses, even the ones listed in different color categories than you’re looking for, because those are just the colors the gowns happen to be photographed in. their “gothic wedding gowns” section has a lot of intricate ballgowns.
