Good question, I want to hear more on this.

Rent-a-pew, ha ha.

Technically, you need to have a seat for every person, but if you have a short ceremony I think it’s fine.  If your wedding ceremony will be over 15 minutes, I think you need to rent 175 chairs.

Basically, you need a chair for every butt.  Go through a party rental company or prop place and rent the additional chairs.  Most places have white folding chairs (and even if they aren’t exacly the same they will be close enough that people probably won’t notice).

You will actually need more than 175 chairs, people won’t sit in the front row and there will always be an empty seat here or there.

If you’re inviting 175 guests then I’d say you need 175 chairs. I’ve only attended one wedding where the guests were forced to stand but I was in it so it didn’t matter much to me. The ceremony location couldn’t really accommodate seating (it was next to a small waterfall) and no one seemed to mind too much but there were a few complaints. If there is seating for some, there should be seating for all.

Our short ceremony was on the Bay, and we rented just 50 chairs. We had 85 guests, but there were chairs on the decks overlooking the site where they were taking pictures, and many people just chose to stand…we had empty seats! Lots of people who do beachy weddings don’t provide any seating at all, so Id say you’re ahead of the game. You also have to figure that even tho you’re inviting 175, you may have many less than that actually attend. Wait until it gets closer and then decide to rent more chairs. You’ll have a better idea of how many you’ll actually need.

If your ceremony is at the same venue as the reception, and there is no gap between the two (ie, cocktails immediately following), I would assume that the majority of the people that RSVP yes will attend both.

I had maybe a handful of people not attend the ceremony, but I did not count on that. If your wedding is on a Friday you might get a few people coming in late because of work, but again, I would not count on that. Our ceremony was outside and a few people stood in the back, but that was their choice. We had seating for everyone.

I would definitely make sure to have a chair for everyone to sit in…

Everyone needs to have a seat. No one wants to stand through the ceremony.
