Just wondering if any of you ladies have any ideas to keep our reception decor from being too stuffy. Our venue is a ballroom in a gorgeous historic hotel but the atmosphere is definitely traditional to say the least. Our palette is gold, cream, pale blush pinks, and coral. The ballroom itself is done mostly in creams, but has a burgundy carpet (which is actually pretty subtle). Our wedding is going to be pretty formal, but I want it to be modern too! Any ideas for table decor or room decor that might keep it contemporary?
We were thinking of having gold linens and chairs with ivory napkins and bright coral menus and floral centerpieces. Would playing up the gold make it more modern or less? How do I keep it from being too matchy-matchy? We are totally open to adding another color, as long as it’s cohesive.
Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks in advance ladies!!

Maybe you could focus on clean, unembelished lines in your decor pieces, and try to keep the menu less frou-frou to avoid the *stuffy* feeling?
I, too, am getting married in a gorgeous, ornate ballroom (two of them, actually) :). In addition to the ballrooms, it is also an evening ceremony, and the ballrooms are in a large city. So, instead of trying to *fight* the decor to lessen the stuffiness (the decor is, afterall, what I love about my venue!), we are keeping the ceremony and reception activities more casual (short ceremony, no seating chart, and we are not doing a lot of the standard reception events) and doing more casual food like pulled pork barbeque and macaroni and cheese (even though it is *gourmet*) in stations, instead of, say, cornish game hens in a traditional plated style.
Hope this helps!

One clarification: we are reserving tables for the wedding party, but we are not assigning the rest of the seating.
