I’d say a language or instrument (not as expensive as you think, you buy the instrument and it’s a one time cost, as long as you don’t take private lessons, and just self-teach via internet or a video or w/e, that’s your only cost, not reoccuring)

Aww I thought you wanted fun facts I had my favorite one all ready to go.

As far as something new to learn, I always thought tending Bonsai looked interesting I also second knitting I do it so often while watching TV that I feel wrong if I’m watching TV and not dong something with my hands, it feels like I’m being super lazy. One of my facebook friends posted this a few days ago with the caption of never be bored again. MIT publishes alot of it’s course material online for free http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

@MmeSilverBullet:  Well I’m French Canadian, so I like it when people learn French lol But it is a difficult language to learn if you don’t live in a place where you can practice it ofen. Spanish is easier, and is very useful to know in the States I think (not sure where you live).

As for instruments, you can buy some beginners instruments that don’t cost as much as a professional grade instrument (I bought a not too expensive used fiddle) and there are excellent books and even lessons on youtube to get you started πŸ™‚ (I am taking lessons, and it is expensive, but I use my book and youtube a lot, so I can spread my lessons more over the year).

You can also start reading a collection of books from the same author (I love Jules Verne, Michael Crichton, Lucy Maud Montgomery) or reading classics (Louisa Alcott, Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, etc). Sometimes they are a little harder to get into, but once you’ve read a few chapters, they become hard to put down lol

I am also fascinated by knitting, but I don’t have time (I started but gave up). I am interested in so many things and activities that I have to give up some of them lol But I know I will try knitting again!

What about some self defense courses, a lot of them are free to women. I am taking Krav Maga classes and I love them, great part is the local instructor does some free classes as the JCC and also instructional classes that you can just show up to for $7 each. No making sure you’re free every Tues at 7pm type of thing, which is great because my schedule is crazy.

@MmeSilverBullet:  Look at the radio lingua website for free podcasts for language learning/improving – they are really well made.i enjoy coffe break French and coffee break Spanish. They do all sorts of languages.

Take up a physical hobby? Like ballet classes or stand up paddle boarding?

@MmeSilverBullet:  It’s the song from Pirates of Penzance (they probably also sang it on Frazier)

It’s even got the lyrics to help you out. XD

Let me know if you decide to learn either language! πŸ˜€ Lol.
