I generally expect baked beans with BBQ but maybe that is a regional thing and I am from the South.  As for the corn on the cob issue, I think you have a valid point and I would suggest serving grilled veggies so there is a lighter option to the beans but keep the beans even if you don’t like them.

We’re doing a BBQ as well and our sides are baked beans, mac & cheese, and salad.  I had to add the salad per the MOB & MOG.  We don’t have any vegetarians coming to our wedding so everything else will be meat.  Pulled pork, grilled chicken, and brisket.  Yum!  I like the mashed potato bar idea a lot and FH would love it.  Hmmm.

You could do each side as a “bar” — you could do the mashed potato bar which was suggested, a mac and cheese bar and a cornbread bar or beans bar?

What about greens for a veggie side?  So instead of say, baked beans and green beans, you could do baked beans and collards. (or mustard greens, etc.)

Corn in the cob is too messy, IMO. I’d replace it with one of the green beans or the mac & cheese (my personal choice!).

I voted for baked beans. grilled veggies and the cornbread.

I am strongly against corn on the cob, not for the mess factor (even though it is) but I inevitably get corn stuck in my teeth when I eat it.  So if you have it, people will be fiddling with their teeth, or walking around with toothpicks, or what have you, and that’s just one thing I think I’d skip.

We are doing something very similar!  I like some of the side options you had, and definitely liked the mac and cheese, just in case there are some pickier kids at the reception (if you’re having kids that is), plus who doesn’t love mac and cheese?

That being said, I think that baked beans are sort of standard with BBQ and might be expected to go along with the meal.  I’d probably steer clear of the corn on the cob, just for the reasons you stated.  It tends to get really messy, you get it stuck in your teeth, butter everywhere, etc.  It sounds delicious but as a guest I probably wouldn’t take a piece because of this.

We had a BBQ buffet for our wedding reception 2 months ago and it was awesome. I’d recommend:

    1. mac and cheese (everyone loves mac and cheese!)

    2. grilled veggies (a lighter option for those who want something other than meat/carbs)

    3. baked beans (bonus points if it’s vegetarian baked beans, either way they are a staple with BBQ)

Good luck! It all sounds delicious!
