Technically, you’re not supposed to host your own engagement party…but if you are going to throw yourself one anyway-I don’t think you need to provide that much entertainment for your guests, I’m sure they will get along just fine. Most likely no one will play a board game like scrabble at a party, but I do think scrabble is a cute idea for decorations. There are tons of ideas for scrabble decor on pinterest. Good luck!

@eecuadrado:  I’ve heard the whole “you’re not supposed to throw your own engagement party” but I have friends that have thrown their own and I have friends whose parents have thrown it. No one has offered to throw us one so we were going to do our own. We were going to make the engagement party *just for friends* and do it super casual, just like a regular house party. I think the showers will be more formal and for the older women in the family to come and bring gifts, so the engagement party is going to be all about us and our friends. As for ideas… I don’t even know what I’m doing for my own…

But for yours I would say the 2 games idea is a good start.. why don’t you turn it into a type of tournament with brackets? Start with 4 tables going instead of 2. Make a rule that the teams have to be intermixed between families. Then have the winners face off for a final challenge or something and provide some cute prizes maybe?

Ugh—stinks no one can throw you one.

Instead of just having a Scrabble theme, why not have all games. While I love me some Scrabble, it’s pretty slow moving, and only fun for the two people playing. Crowd-pleasing games like Pictionary, Charades, Name That Tune, and Apples to Apples would get all of your guests involved, chatting, and bonding much more than Scrabble.

Love the scrabble idea!  I would have more than two games going; agree with PP that it might be fun to make it a tournament.  You could hang little pieces of art made with scrabble pieces that combine two or more words, like your and your FI’s names, love, wedding, anthing having to do with your relationship.  Maybe have two or three cocktails made up and name them things like “Triple Word Score” and “Double Letter.”
