i have a really hard time swallowing pills. i can handle birth control-sized pills, but nothing much bigger than that. when i was 7, i got a big piece of candy stuck in my throat and couldn’t breath for a few seconds (but it felt like much longer). it eventually made its way down, but it scared the hell out of me and i think that’s why i have such a hard time with pills.
when i have to take pills i usually cut or crush them. right now i’m on an antibiotic in capsule form. normally i would just open it up and mix the medicine with some ice cream or something. but even mixed with ice cream, it tastes horrible and i feel like throwing up afterwards, which definitely isn’t going to help anything. i have swallowed capsules like this once before- it was a struggle, but i did it and i keep telling myself, “you did it once, you can do it again,” but i have yet to make it happen :/
i’ve tried big gulps of water, tilting my head back, tilting my head down…i haven’t tried swallowing with soda, so that will be my next thing and i’ll also give it a shot with ice cream. but if you have any other tricks or advice, i want to hear it! i have to take these pills 4 times a day for the next 3 days and it’s stressing me out 🙁

Don’t take it with soda! I think when you take a big gulp of a carbonated beverage, the bubbles make it harder to swallow a pill. I like to take a big mouthful of water or juice before I put the pill in my mouth and then sneak the pill in. That way it doesn’t stick you your tongue or throat. Otherwise, try taking it with a spoonful of pudding or yogurt.

@paperumbrella: really? i heard that the bubbles help “disguise” the pill so that you don’t really feel it, lol. i guess soda will be my last resort then. thanks!

@lilchicana: Don’t tilt your head up or down. I used to tilt it back to swallow pills but I find that keeping my head straight and just swallowing normally makes it easier. Capsules suck because they float in the water inside your mouth which makes it harder :/ So put the capsule in first and then don’t hesitate as soon as you take a swig of water.

I used to be juuuust like you, I’d have to psych myself up before putting the pill on my tongue then OMGNOWNOWNOWLOTSOFLIQUID while I gagged a little at the very thought of that pill on my tongue. I had a few instances of the pill getting stuck in my throat or somewhere in my mouth and then dissolving, etc when I was a kid – enough to freak me out about the whole thing and make it a way bigger deal than it is to most people…then I had to take 4-6 pills per day, every day.
And I know this probably isn’t comforting quite yet, but now it’s seriously no big deal. I’m a pro at it lol, and the only way that happened was having no choice but to take the pills or be miserable. It doesn’t phase me anymore, I can now take a whole bunch of pills in one gulp!
I think that practice and lots of water will solve this problem for you in due time.

I think it was a pharmacist who told my Darling Husband to take a pill with a thick drink, maybe I read it on WB though 🙂
Something like a smoothie or milkshake. I don’t usually have an issue with large pills though.

Ahh I feel for you! I couldn’t swallow pills until I was 17 (when I went on BC) and only then could I swallow the little pills, definitely not the big ones. When I was 20 I needed to take a big antibiotic, and they said I had to swallow it whole. I remember crying in my car lol, I’m glad no one saw me. I took it with water and I just kept trying over and over. However once I was able to do it just once I had no problems after that. Good luck!

@lilchicana: The bubbles can even make some pills foam! I had these muscle relaxers for my back last year and I took one with soda and the entire thing started to foam in the back of my throat! and I couldnt get the taste out! Diet Coke is my go to drink but after that I was scared to drink it with pills.
A thick drink or the pudding that other posters suggested really do work and is worth a try.

I can’t swallow pills either! I get made fun of by everyone but honestly the only thing that helps me is chewing on some bread and then right before I’m about to swallow I sneak the pill in and it goes down like nothing!

I am just like you. I can handle birth control pills, and Advil. Anything bigger than that? Nope.
What I use to help myself swallow pills, is… kind weird:
I chew just a couple of Goldfish crackers (or Cheez-its – some kind of really small cracker) and JUST BEFORE I’m about to swallow, yknow how that little pile of food is on the back of your tongue? I stick the pill on top of the little pile of chewed crackers, and take a swig of water (or whatever beverage I have).
This works for 2 reasons: 1, I’m thirsty because of the crackers, so my “need for beverage” is really the first thing on my mind; and 2, the little pile of chewed crackers on the back of my tongue disguises the pill, so I trick myself into thinking “hey, you’re just swallowing food!”

Bend forward and swallow like your drinking from a drinking foutain. Works like a charm….it’s more forceful and natural then when your head is tilted back.

My Darling Husband hated hated hated taking pills and I finally taught him how to do it so it’s not an issue anymore. Don’t put the pill on your tongue. Pull your tongue back and put the pill behind your teeth. Then water, swallow.

@turnanewleaf: haha, yes! that’s exactly me! i finally work up the nerve to do it, but as soon as the pill is on my tongue, i panic!
@Footballwife: ooh, i’ve never heard of that happening. ok, definitely staying away from the soda then.
@ThinkingOutLoud: everyone likes to give me a hard time too. earlier my husband was like, “just swallow it already!!!” like, dude, you’re not helping, you’re just stressing me out more.
that’s a trick i’ve never heard before. i’ll try that.
thank you all for your advice so far. i’ll try it with food, smoothies, everything. the pharmacist said i would gain weight on these pills because i have to take them with food. looks like she may be right, haha

I have a hard time sometimes, and I use milk. It’s thicker, so my brain expects something more tanglible in my throat than water, I guess? Also, a lot of pills/vitamins make my stomach hurt, so the milk helps there too.

I can’t take big pills either. I always chew food and then just push the pill in the middle of the food and swallow it. It works well with marshmallows 🙂
