Oftentimes on a well-made lace dress, the lace will overlap on the sides.  So there’ll be side seams on all the other layers but on the outermost lace layer, they’ll have extra lace there (for letting the dress out) but they’ll cut carefully around the lace pattern to make an edge that’s not noticeable and just overlap the two sides and sew it down with invisible thread.  So if you get it taken in, they just take out the invisible thread, take in the other layers like normal, then trim any extra lace if there’s too much to make it look good, then overlap and sew down again with invisible thread.  Magic!
