Fellow Minnesotan here!  I would shoot for mid to late September.  October may be a bit on the cold side depending on the year of course.  I think “peak” colors are usually at the end of September.  Again depends on the year, but if you really want that fall look I would look into a late September wedding.

we are getting married in Oct – the 10th to be exact in southern Mn and the ceremony is outside and the reception is alos outside with a neighboring lodge.  You should be fine if you have a tent or other shelter in case its cold.

soon2beemccleary:  Ooo, that’s a good question. I think it will just kind of depends. It depends on the weather that year and the where you are in MN. I remember going to Stillwater in Sept and it was lovely! Here’s a link I found that MIGHT help. October could be pretty chilly, but if it’s a quick ceremony outside (with a back up plan) it could be fun! I can also picture some venues that have tall windows looking into the trees (that must exist somewhere, right??) which would be cool!

I’m just south of Chicago, but I went to a wedding the first weekend of Oct this past year and it was miserably cold.  The bride was visibly shivering and everyone was cold.  Even with a space heater in the tent, it was just too cold.  It depends on the weather, as I know we get warm weekends in Oct too, but I wouldn’t risk it.

Check out this website:

It shows the averages for MN in October…looks like your best bet would be to do it early; From the last chart, it looks like (based on averages), you’ve got something like a 65-75% chance of the weather being above 50 degrees the first week of October and the chances get slimmer and slimmer after that.

Maybe try to find a loft venue? That’s what we’re using and it has awesome windows all the way around the room. I live in the midwest although I’m in St Louis so I’m pretty far south and even here October can be hit and miss.

This is our venue:

soon2beemccleary:  Nope – I’m getting married in MN in October this year!! You definitely have to be prepped for a contingency plan, but October is gorgeous in Minnesota!

edit: I just saw you’re having an outdoor ceremony… that might be different (we’re doing a church wedding). It can still be doable, as long as it’s short and you have a plan for just in case.

I was married 11/2/2013 and the weather was a bit chilly in the 40’s. As all Minnesotan’s know, we could have sunny, warm weather one day and snow the next. I think an outdoor wedding is completely acceptable as long as you have some backups in place like a basket of blankets for laps, maybe some mittens or hand warmers, and / or some vendors you can rent outdoor heaters from.

soon2beemccleary:  Souther Minn bride here!

IMO, i wouldnt do it. some years its blazing hot still, some just right, and others its snowing by then. unless it would be VERY early oct, like in the first week, i wouldnt do it. it also gets superrrrr windy in MN in the fall, with the leaves blowing off too, it could be quite uncomfortable..

The ceremony is going to be outside in our backyard and won’t last long so wo cares if its chilly?

At the receoption we are having blankets, a bonfire, and a lodge at the receotion with a fireplace.  Its a pretty intimate and  casual reception.  In fact, my “then-husband” is doing alot of the grilling himself.  I also did heavy research on the historical weather.  It hasn’t rained that weekend in 7 years and the temps are typically tolerable.

What kind of wedding are you planning?
