@fabulousbee:  I think the destination wedding is a great compromise.  You’ll do the family thing in your home country, and have a few friends for the ceremony, and as for having a private honeymoon.  Tell your friends that! They’ll understand that while you want them there for the wedding, after that you want to be alone.  Plus, they’ll probably want to have a vacation themselves! 

If you wanted to compromise, you could pick one night after the ceremony to do a “reception dinner” and tell all your friends who are invited that that’s the time to share and celebrate together, then you’re going to do your own thing, and I think people would respect that. 

I SERIOUSLY considered eloping just us, but I came to the same conclusion you’re seeing, I felt I would have regretted how lonely it was for me. So we ended up doing a small-ish wedding of about 80 people (for my family that’s tiny! my sister’s wedding was deemed “small” and she had almost 300 guests) and it was perfect for us.
