Soooo I stopped taking my birth control pill about 2 months ago because it made me quite irritable. I was taking Yaz and prior had tried several different types of birth control pills. I had been on birth control for approximately 9 years (yikes!). I am now practicing FAM which is going really well and I’m right on time with my temping in the AM but my acne (which was amazingly controlled on birth control) is rearing its ugly head. I feel better now than I ever had when I was on birth control but having a nice, clear complexion is also really important to me, especially since my wedding is in September. I do not want to have to worry about breaking out the day before! Any suggestions? Should I stay off the pill for a bit longer to see if maybe the breakouts get better or maybe they will get worse?!?! Who has had experience with this? Any suggestions on facial cleansers, treatments, etc. Currently I just wash my face with Safeguard in the shower every morning and then use YesToBlueberries facial clothes in the PM before bed.
FYI: I’m 25 years old if that makes any difference. Anddd I currently have 4 “pimples” which is what I consider horrible! I know to some that may be nothing!

I would wait a while and just say off the BC even if you aren’t planning on getting back on it later. It sounds like your plan is a little too basic, you should try using something geared toward acne and make sure to moisturize and use SPF during the day!

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy: This is exactly what I used while taking the pill so that’s just what I continued but now I’m realizing you’re probably right. I used Olay Total Effects – Blemish Control which worked well in the past.

If you have the type of breakouts that are red and inflamed, I would use Cetaphil or Purpose or another mild cleanser and I would use a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment. I have even used a bit of hydrocortizone cream to help with swelling. I would also exfoliate a few times a week too, but be careful that you aren’t using anything too harsh. Also, don’t use products with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide together (I’ve heard they can “cancel” each other out) but it’s fine to use one at night, the other in the morning, etc.
Your body may take a few months to readjust. If it keeps up, consider going to the dermatologist.

Tea tree oil. Helps me SO much. Though I don’t get bad breakouts, it’s just good for clearing up the odd few spots here and there. And it’s worked for people who’ve had big breakouts too!

I went on BC for acne at 17 and have been off an on for years. Whenever I went off for ~ 9 months or so last my skin was fine at first but awful 3-4 months in (it takes a while for it to leave your system.)
I’ve been to lots of docs. Unfortunately in my case, the primary problem is genetics. My sisters/mom all have acne well into their 30s. My mom gets it sometimes in her 60s still. I have tried every different medicine or regimin short of accutane, but antibiotics seem to have the only real effect–minocycline, primarily, though it made me nauseated. So, I’ll probably be on BC for life!

Go see your dermatologist. I had bad breakouts when I went off of hormonal birth control and the derm gave me a topical prescription that cleared it up right away. I did have to try a couple of different prescriptions, but ultimately found a combo that worked for me.
