🙁  I dunno but I’m overseas too at the moment.  You could try buying one online and then shipping it to yourself to have it altered.  Have you ever been in a wedding, as a bridesmaid or anything?  You could call the same place you got your dress from there b/c they would already have your measurements.  Are you able to get alterations done where you’re at right now?

Welcome! What about buying something online like from David’s Bridal? Or, try to find a Bridesmaid or Best Man dress that you can get in ivory? If you do your research, you should find some options online that might ship overseas. Otherwise, you should be able to get alterations done at a bridal salon, even if you didn’t buy a dress from them directly. They still employ seamstresses that can do alterations and have familiarity with wedding gowns. Where are you overseas? What about buying a dress there and bringing it home with you?

Do you have a sister/friend/mother who has a similar build who might try dresses on for you and take pictures?  If you stalk a website and get pics, you could send them in with a shortlist.  Then you can have alterations done once you get back?  I’m not doing my alterations because my dress is in a different city untill about three months before my wedding, so it might be tight but it could work.

I’m overseas, and will only be home about 2 weeks before the wedding.  I’m having it made here and bringing it back with me.  Where are you?  Are you in a country where it’s possible to buy a dress/get it made?  If so, I would suggest a less poofy dress for the plane.  However, if you can’t buy it/get it made/get it shipped to you, there is still time for you to get alterations if you will be home a few months before your wedding.  Perhaps you could get your mum or sister or friends to go check out perspective dresses for fit/quality/style and get their feedback before you go ahead and order it?

You are very welcome.

As for your mom not being there, maybe there would be a way you could set up a web cam or something, so she could be there that way.

Can you fit into a sample size?  As long as you can get it on and you’re not a 00, you should be able to buy a dress as a sample and have it altered down.  I’m a 0/2 and am having a sample 8 altered down.  You buy your dress and walk out with it that day.  You will have to buy a dress within a week or two of returning, but it’s manageable.  Buying a sample is a good way to get a gorgeous dress for a lot less, too!  You’ll have enough time for alterations.  I’m not getting mine altered until June for my August wedding.

Alternatively, do they have wedding dress shops in the country where you are now?

When I went to the one wedding shop here, I took pictures and sent them to my mum and sister.  I’m no longer getting my dress there, but I took some patterns, pics, and fabric to my sister when I went to visit her in HK this Christmas to get her opinion.  I also get suckered into buying things I don’t want very easily, so telling the dress shop woman I needed to get my mum’s ‘approval’ from the pics I took was a good way to help me avoid that kind of situation.!!!

You should go try on dresses.  Half of the styles I thought I’d like, I totally hated when I put them on.  I swoooorrrre I loved lace, but nope, shiny fabrics like charmeuse looked much better on me!  Once you at least know what shape and fabric you want, though, you should be good to buy online.
