My fridge just died, I got back from a 9 day trip to find everything spoiled and melted in the freezer. I’ve been wanting a new one soon anyways so I guess this just speeds things up. I did some looking around for a new fridge before and found that stainless and white or black were the same price a lot of the time. If white was cheaper, it was a no brainer to go with that since my dishwasher and ovens are white. My cooktop is black on the island, but that seems to work on not clash
So….. Would a stainless fridge look weird with a white dishwasher and ovens? Should I stick with a white fridge? I have no plans to replace the dishwasher and ovens anytime soon until they break. We almost never use the oven so I cant imagine replacing that for a long long time. Should I start the change to stainless with the fridge? Dishwasher I woudln’t have a problem changing since I imagine that is under 1k, but the ovens I have are like 2500 so those are staying for sure. Would it be weird in the future if the fridge and dishwasher were stainless and the oven was still white? I also hate the 80’s oak cabinets and plan on painting them a chocolate/espresso eventually.
The toaster and water heater and microwave are no longer there either, if that makes a difference.

@pinkshoes: Hmmm this is a hard one. We had a white dishwasher and microwave when we bought our house (foreclosure). Since there wasn’t a stove or fridge, we had to buy those. The original plan was to buy new Stainless for the stove and fridge, and live with mismatched appliances. Then when we went shopping over Labor Day weekend, we ran into awesome deals and ended up buying everything new and stainless steel (fridge, stove, microwave, and dishwasher).
Are you planning to sell you home in the future? If not, then I would say buy whatever color appliance you like best. If you are okay with them mismatching, because you know one day they will all match, then buy the Stainless one you like now. And as a sidenote, try to get the “smudge-free” stainless kind…fingerprints are always visable on my stainless fridge!

I love, love, love my stainless steel kitchen appliances so I voted stainless. But, I am weird about everything matching in a kitchen so for yours maybe go with white, unless you plan to replace everything with stainless sometime soon.

I have the same advice as the two PP’s. Definitely stainless (if you plan to slowly change out all appliances) and definitely the fingerprint proof ones, they rock!
But by the sound of it, you’re not planning to change the oven. Therefore I voted white – for matching purposes 😉

I have stainless but it’s not the fingerproof one and I hate the fingersprints! If you plan on eventually changing them all out I would go with stainless.
However, JennAir makes a floating glass white fridge that I absolutely love!

I think that whatever you prefer works, but because you don’t plan on replacing the other appliances anytime soon if it were me I would want them all to match. White is going to be cheaper possibly too.

Start the change to stainless if it’s not a huge additional expense. Your other appliances are bound to break eventually and like a PP you may stumble across a great deal on a dishwasher or stove in the future even if they don’t need replaced yet. You may regret investing in another white appliance that will likely look dated soon if and when the other appliances bite the bullet.

We sort of had the same situation as you. Our fridge was on the fritz and we had to buy a new one. We opted for the Stainless Steel, however we eventually want to do the kitchen over and have all new stainless steel applicances. Another however, as of right now the fridge is stainless and everything else but our toaster oven is white. I really don’t even notice it to be honest! But if you don’t plan on ever going stainless all the way, it might be a waste.

Our appliances were all almond (yay) when we moved in. We immediately bought a stainless fridge and just updated the dishwasher 14 months later. The mismatching honestly didn’t bother me. I’d buy whatever look you prefer.
ETA: I’ve never had issues with fingerprints/smudges. I just don’t understand why you’d touch something other than the handle? Clearly I don’t have children.

Stainless steel to me is the devil, seriously. I don’t think I will ever understand why someone designed a finish on items that are constantly touched that show every single mark/finger print/smudge/food item. I just don’t get it. Like a black car when stainless steel is clean it looks amazing, but it only stays clean for about a minute or two.
I like white. It isn’t fabulous or modern or cutting edge but lord knows it looks clean 99% of the time. I have heard great things about the new smudge-free stainless but I don’t know how available it is yet and it is more of a brushed looked than the typical stainless appearance.

@pinkshoes: I vote white. I had a stainless steel fridge and it drove me absolutely crazy with the fingerprints. I was wiping down the fridge three times a day. I have a white one now, and it’s great – no fingerprints!
Plus, white matches the rest of your applianes, especially if you’re keeping the ovens.

@SoonToBeMrsD921: Can you post a picture? I really can’t picture what one stainless would look like with the rest white.
@missoptimism: lol, I don’t how long applicances typically last, but my parents old stove went 20+ years before the oven finally bit the bullet and they got a new one! I imagine thats how long it would take me to finally replace it if I waited for it to break!

@pinkshoes: Appliances should match. If you are going to replace all your appliances relatively soon, then I vote for stainless. All my stainless appliances (all purchased in the last 2-3 years) are fingerprint proof (combination of Maytag and Frigidaire). I think older stainless appliances didn’t have that feature. However, if you are keeping the other white appliances, they should match.

@Treejewel19: I agree with you on the fingerprints! I don’t mind white appliances — I more care about appliances matching, personally.

Stainless is the worst for fingerprints! I have to clean my fridge and stove weekly. I would say for your kitchen to get white cause then it would match better. We currently have a black dishwasher and all the other appliances are stainlessa nd it makes me crazy! I cant wait to replace it with a stainless one
