Hi there! New here but frequent reader….
just got engaged two weeks ago and my fiancé and I live in South Carolina but our families are in NY, and MA. We would like to get married somewhere in the middle, adirondack area or finger lakes. We are aiming for less than $10k with less than 75 guests. I’d like something modern, no hotels preferably no country clubs. Anyone know any reasonable venues? Looking at May 2014 so I am aiming mostly for indoors.

@Aashoum: Hi! I’m not sure the Adirondacks and the word “modern” go together so well. What kind of vibe are you going for? There are plenty of rustic venues (barns, B&B’s, lodges). I am getting married in Inlet, NY (southern ADK’s) at The Woods Inn (a 23 room old fashioned lodge) and searched high and low for our place. There aren’t really wedding venues, you just sort of pick a place and ask to do a wedding there. If you’re looking for something a little offbeat I’d suggest the Tupper Lake wild center (www.wildcenter.org) it’s very cool. Or the Adirondack Museum (adkmuseum.org). They will do weddings but like I said, they aren’t wedding venues. Unless you go through a hotel or country club (I know you said no) you will not find someplace with a tremendous amount of wedding experience. I have scads more venues in the Adirondacks – let me know more what you’re looking for.
For the finger lakes I’d suggest the LakeWatch Inn (lakewatchinn.com) it’s not really an inn and you can’t really see the lake, but it is awesome. We were going to pick that place if we did it in the finger lakes. The girl who runs the place is VERY put together and has done hundreds of weddings. I think it’s pretty in budget for you as well – and the size will be perfect.
This is the hardest part of the whole wedding planning process, let me know if I can help in any way!

@Aashoum: I just saw that your wedding date is May 24th. That is PRIME blackfly season in the Adirondacks – I strongly suggest looking more at the finger lakes if that date is firm.

Our venue is Garnet Hill Lodge in North River, NY… at Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks. Check it out: http://www.garnet-hill.com. its a rustic mountain lodge… not sure if that’s you vibe or not.

We had a similarly-sized reception at ZaZa’s Cucina in Ithaca, and loved it – would do it there again in a second.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am over the adirondacks for now… and I can’t find anything too modern in Finger Lakes that isnt booked because of commencement weekend at Cornell! The date is super special to us….
Looking now at Rochester and I fell in love with Max’s at Eastman and it’s booked too! 🙁
Anything similar to Max’s that is in downtown Rochester?

There are a lot of wineries in the finger lakes region. Google wineries, you may find something beautiful.

Culver Rd Armory? It’s newish, haven’t heard of a wedding being there but it’s an amazing looking space. http://culverroadarmory.com/
Tratas is in there and they’re associated with Marché, so catering shouldn’t be a problem. http://www.marcheculinaryevents.com/

Agree with Minirayray: another vote for Lake Placid !!
(One of Mr TTR’s and I fave spots in the Adirondacks)
And if you are open to the Adirondack Region (beautiful), then you might want to also consider the other side of Lake Champlain and the Burlington Vermont area as well.
Hope this helps,
