@IrvingButterfly:  how many guests are you expecting?  the more guests you have the more variety of items you need.  also, you need to have a meal that will suit the masses.  i would love spicy chicken pasta but i don’t think everyone will enjoy spicy food.

if you are doing this yourselves you are going to want to keep it simple.  as for the finger foods, mini quiches, mini spring rolls, chicken or beef satays, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, fruit platter.

have you considered a simple meat dish for dinner as well?  roasted pork loin side rice or mashed potatoes.  broccoli or green beans or glazed carrots for veg.

these are all very easy to prepare ahead of time and will keep in the chafing dishes.

@IrvingButterfly:  if you have a lot of guests, it would be ok to have the chicken pasta dish that your fi wants and have another main meat dish like pork or beef.

For the dinner part- why not do it as a “pasta bar” rather then single dish?  You would have something like the following:

noodles (probably just one kind)

Spicy sauce

cream sauce or other not spicy sauce

Chicken breasts cut into smallish pieces

Something like roasted eggplant, peppers, mushrooms- whatever veggie or blend of veggies you think the family would enjoy

Some yummy cheeses

Guests can go through and make whatever pasta dish they like- spicy chicken pasta, meatball pasta, veggie pasta, veggie chicken pasta…. you get the idea.

You would still serve the salad and bread with it, this just gives guests more of a choice.

I just saw this post and like @nikkialys: , I was going to suggest a pasta bar.

With the pasta you could offer a green salad  with a choice of several dressings and roasted vegetables. It’s so easy to do huge pans of roasted vegetables and they stand up well on a buffet.

I am having approx 60 ppl at my wedding/reception and this is our menu (buffet style)

Greek Salad

Caesar Salad

Baked Salmon

Beef Dish

Mini Baked Potatoes

Chicken Wing’s

Cold Cuts

This way there is something for everyone, especially the children.  Hope this gives you some ideas.

I love the idea of having a pasta bar!  It will allow your guests to choose what they like while keeping a nice theme. Also, some peole may not be able to handle the spicy chicken due to ulcers/acid reflux etc.
