Ok, help!! We we have been told that my current rose gold/lilac sapphire ring is simply too delicate to last and needs to be reset. I have been doing a lot of research and I ended up falling head over heals for a rose gold, vintage halo setting from Shane Co, but the problem is that the setting is made for a 1 ct, oval stone, and my stone is a roughly 1.75 ct, elongated cushion. They checked with the jeweler and he said they could definitely have my stone set in the ring, but my stone would sit higher and will overlap some of the halo. I’m having a hard time picturing how high it will actually sit, and whether or not the mismatched shape of the stone/setting will look weird. Should I set the stone in the mismatched setting or keep looking? I’d love to hear any and all opinions or suggestions!
Potential new setting:

MadBalloon25 : I like the idea but I don’t think it will look very nice with a the overlap.
Have you thought of going a custom route or maybe just wearing your engagement rings sometimes and getting a more sturdy stand in with a style you like??
The color of your sapphire is glorious! Hope you find something that enhances its beauty.

Your ring is gorgeous! I’m not sure about the overlap. I would talk with some jewelers about having a custom setting made.

MadBalloon25 : The new setting is beautiful but I don’t think they should even try setting an elongated cushion into a setting that’s made for an oval that’s smaller. I think after having it for a little bit, it would bug you. Have you thought of just having the setting made for your stone? I recommend David Klass!

I would have someone custom make that setting for your ring, or shop around for it in a cushion size. I’ve seen some like it on Etsy. I love your stone, but putting it in a setting that doesn’t fit will make it just as delicate as your other setting.
I’m also not totally sure I but the delicate setting thing. It may warp one day but why not wait until that day?

Nononono. It will not look good at all and you’ll end up resetting it again or hating it forever. The current setting is perfect for your stone – enhances without detracting, and it is the proper size. I assume that the band is the problem and needs to be a little wider?
I voted for Reset the sapphire in a more durable version of its current setting – the ‘new’ one is not going to look as good as the original halo, even in the correct size. Too much rose gold showing that will detract, and mostly because the shape is made for an oval, not an elongated cushion.

I voted also to reset the stone in a more durable version of your current setting. It’s gorgeous. Personally I don’t like the other pics at all. I think they detract from the loveliness of the stone whereas yours just looks “right”.
Can they just use the current head and put it on a more sturdy shank? (of course unless that would compromise it..worth asking)

First off, I’ve seen so many beautiful rings on these boards but my jaw literally dropped! OMG! How GORG is your ring?! Stunning! I don’t have much advice but I’d say keep looking or perhaps try to get a custom setting made.

Check out Kristin Coffin jewelry – she makes similar looking settings that might fit your stone better for size.

I’m having trouble picturing it perfectly, but I imagine it would be much preferable to set your beautiful stone in a setting that will 100% fit.
Out of curiosity, who said your current setting was too delicate? It looks a lot like mine (I have a white sapphire set in a thin halo/micropave band) and haven’t had any issues for the past almost 2 years.

Thank you all for your input!! I think I agree with you all that I should find a setting that will match my stone. Trying to fit a cushion in an oval will just make the ring look “forced” and will take away from the soft look i am going for.
I realize I should probably add a little more of a back story to explain why we need the reset. I ordered my ring from the etsy seller Eidelprecious and I LOVE the way it looks and the dainty band, but unfortunately the quality of the setting just isn’t there (this was before she changed her settings). I have lost 2 small diamonds and have had my center stone become loose twice now. When we took it into our local jeweler they politely told me that just about all of my diamonds in the band and halo are loose and that they do not want to do any work on it because it would just cause further damage to the ring. Essentially they told me my only option was to reset the stone and start over. Ugh. I did know it was delicate when we bought it and I was extremely careful (didn’t wear it to work, cleaning, showering, sleeping, etc) but the ring still isn’t holding up and the two year warranty has come and gone.
I am hesitant to order anything else online just because I would hate to get a similar, delicate band and be in this same situation in another few years although I am having a very hard time finding a setting which will hold my stone in an actual store. There is one I found at a retailer that is basically a beefier version of what I have now but it is just slightly more than we were hoping to spend. I would LOVE to hear any recommendations of online sellers who are extremely reputable and have durable, yet delicate looking, settings (post photos if you have them!!). And I will check out the recommendations of those who have already commented!
Thank you guys! This is incredibly helpful!!

jasc8790 : I have heard that name before (David Kloss) but I just assumed the custom route would be over our budget. Do you know if there is a charge for the actual customization process or if you are just paying for materials and labor when actually building the ring? I can’t seem to find the info on his site

MadBalloon25 : You don’t pay for the customization process at all. He doesn’t even charge for CADs. He’s so awesome! I’ve been in pretty regular contact with him since the very beginning of February – first for my ring, then for my sister’s and now for my FSIL’s. You can email him at [email protected], tell him what you want and attach pics, and he’ll give you a quote! You don’t pay anything until after the ring is done. He is a wholesale jeweler so he gives you the best price he can but his quality and craftsmanship are incredible! You should check him out on IG, just search davidklassjewelry

MadBalloon25 : we went through David Klass. The quality is absolutely incredible and it cost less than any other retailer we found for non-custom. He bills himself as a wholesaler, I have no idea why.

Thank you both!! I will check out his IG page tonight… it sounds like it will be worth sending him an email and getting a quote!
