We need to make the decision by 6PM today. There are two diamond in two stores that looks identical to me. They are also the same caret and same price. However, here is the catch.
One of the diamond is GIA certi H color and SI 1 clarity. The other one is EGL USA certi G color VS1. I know EGL diamond is not as strick as GIA, but how bad it is?
With the same caret and same price. Which one should we purchase???
Thanks sooooo much for your help

If they are the same carat/price I would DEFINITELY go for the GIA, assuming that you know what the inclusions look like in that stone. Some SI1’s aren’t eye-clean.
I’ve seen threads on Pricescope where EGL-graded stones were up to five grades off in color/clarity.

@fiona8718: Speaking from experience of having both a EGL and GIA certified diamond, I would definitely go with the GIA because it is more widely accepted by most jewelers. The EGL I think tends to overvalue the quality of the diamond. I was engaged before and the diamond I had was EGL certified and I had a broken engagement. Instead of taking the diamond to a pawn shop I took it to the same jeweler my now Fiance bought my e-ring from to get it put on consignment so they could sell it. The appraised value of the EGL was significantly higher than what the guy appraised it for with the GIA certification. The diamond was appraised at $4500 and I think the GIA appraisal was only $2300. I never knew that there was a huge difference but there is, so I would definitely stick with the GIA over EGL. 🙂

GIA without a question. EGL grades are majorly inflated.

Since pricing is equal, then definitely GIA! No doubt about it.

GIA. Not even a question.
Before we knew better we bought an EGL diamond. Oddly enough, we’ve had it appraised twice by two different GIA appraisers and one gave it better specs and value than EGL had and the other gave it the same specs but a lower value than EGL.
But GIA is who you want.

If they are equal in size and price I would go with the one that looks prettier to you and not worry so much about the certificantion. You’re not going to wear that certificate on your finger, you’ll wear the ring. So go with the one with more sparkle, better proportions, better cut.
