Fiance and I are buying a new sofa but can’t decide which fabric to get. The room it will be in is two shades of gray (light on top and dark on the bottom). It will be placed under a print of Boathouse Row in Philly.
We can’t decide if we should get a neutral beige color
a blue checkered print
or a blue floral print.
What do you think, bees?

I like the beige with the walls but I would worry about stains if you have pets, guests, or kids. I like the floral but I don’t think it goes with the room based on the pics.

@shaynapunim: I like all of them, but I prefer neutral couches.

I like the Blue Floral, but it doesn’t go with the walls…
I typically like neutral colors on couches also, but I can’t tell from the picture if it goes well with the walls or not.
Checker pattern doesn’t go at all/too much with the painting above/not a fan anyways.
Out of all of them, if you don’t plan on painting, I would go with the beige 🙂

@MrsBG: Would you recommend something different, then?
I prefer them, as well. Still, I thought I’d give prints a try. 🙂

I think couches are investment pieces and should be neutral so that you can change accessories and wall color around them! I think the beige is the best choice here.

@BCPDmrs: We don’t plan on painting. Thank you for your detailed input! 🙂
Very good point! I didn’t think of that. Thanks for the tip!

We actually have an Ethan Allen sofa in the same fabric as the beige sample you are showing. We’ve only had the sofa since February but LOVE it. (We chose an ivory color.) The best thing about the fabric is that it is “pet friendly” (cat has tried clawing it several times and it shows nothing) and is easy to change up with different shape/colors/patterns of throw pillows and blankets. We currently are between residences and living in an apartment and wanted something that would work in any future space we may place it. For that reason I would recommend the neutral color.

@Pand0ra: I’m so glad you love your Ethan Allen sofa! We’re excited to get ours (even though it won’t come in for three months). It’s good to know the fabric is “pet friendly.” Thanks for the info! 🙂

Only buy a print fabric if you are head over heels in love with it. Since you cannot decide, that tells me that neither print makes you all swoony. So I’d go with a solid fabric.

@lovekiss: Thank you for your comment! I think we’re going to go with the beige and use the prints for throw pillows.

@shaynapunim: I like the floral but I think the beige would go best with how you have the room and be more versatile if you decide to redecorate or paint.

If you are buying a quality sofa that you will use for years, I would always go with a neutral color. You may change your mind in a couple of years , hate blue and be stuck with a blue check or floral sofa.
Choose the neutral and add color and print in toss pillows.

@BluePeaches: Good point!
Thanks for the tip! We ended up buying the beige and getting throw pillows in the two prints.
