I was so excited when I convinced my fiancée that a beautiful, intimate wedding in Florence/Tuscany with a reception later at home would be much less stressful than a huge blowout wedding in the states. I love the thought of having an entire weekend of memories with both of our familes, and I LOVE Italy! That being said, I started to research venues, planners, photographers, etc., and now I’m completely overwhelmed and thinking it will be MORE stressful, which makes me really sad. My biggest concern is not having the look and style I’m going for, from both florists and photographers, and the stress of getting 20 people over to a foreign country and plan events, transportation, etc.
Has anyone done this and can either reassure me that it can happen, or talk me off the ledge? How did you find a wedding planner that you could trust with your foreign wedding weekend? For reference, my dream Italian wedding would be renting a small villa in the Tuscan countryside for an entire weekend for my family to stay, and having the ceremony either there or in Florence and then having a traditional Italian meal afterwards. I also picture going on a winetasting tour, taking a cooking class, that sort of thing with my family leading up to it. I also could picture getting married in Positano on the Amalfi Coast. Oh, and my budget is going to be $20-$30k and I hope to pay for our flights, some family members’ flights, and rent an entire villa with that for 2-3 nights. Any advice??? I know that’s a lot of info, but that’s what’s churning in my brain right now! I don’t want to regret not doing it, but I also feel like it could go terribly wrong.

Find a wedding planner that specializes in destination weddings. Style me pretty has some options to start your search.
Interview a couple of them, explain your vision, approx. budget and what activities you want to do, ask them about what their scope of services can cover and go from there.
We had a destination wedding in europe and it was amazing but we also had an amazing planner that was perfect for us. She brought us a few options for every decision (photog, cake, hair/makeup, etc) and it really kept the stress down.
You can absolutely do it! But I highly, highly urge you to do it with a professional.

topeonyornottopeony : Thanks for the encouragement! I will absolutely hire a professional if we do a destination wedding—just needed to hear from someone from the other side haha!

dallastx2017 : I originally started planning a Tuscan wedding too! Annoyingly it just didn’t work out for us, mostly due to my need to be in control and visit the venue and organiser as and when I needed. I had found this villa which is owned by a guy who has hosted a few weddings there already and was super helpful! http://www.casaledepasquinelli.it
the villa sleeps 39 so will accommodate most of your guests and is about an hour – 1.5 hours from Florence airport or Pisa
one thing to note, the ceremony isn’t legal unless you go down to the nearest town hall which is 30 mins away in Lucca. Not all venues are ordained. However the owner can organise all of that for you. He sent me all the menus and if you specify a budget for decoration and flowers plus colour themes and photos of what you like e will organise it within your budget. He also helps you organise things like a pre wedding pizza party or wine tasting nearby for the group.
Honestly ive never had someone so helpful and I really wish it was within our budget to have the Tuscan wedding but with going back and forth to view venues and organise 60 odd guests it was just too much for us.
We also looked at places in Umbria which is slightly cheaper than Tuscany but just as beautiful. Another thing to note, not sure when you’re looking to have your wedding but spring and Autumn weather can be temperamental so an outdoor wedding can be risky, summer is perfect if maybe a little too warm!
Some venues have an in house coordinator who manages it all. We also looked at a venue in Rome.

flipsflops : This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to respond! And that villa is stunning and exactly what I’m picturing…I’m also a control freak like you/Type A personality (I’m one of those people who do not react well when the vision/plan is not executed how I imagined it), but what inspired me to do a Destination Wedding was actually all of my bride friends. Every single one of them, whether they were the type to have it all planned out or not, are SO stressed with planning a big hometown wedding and just want it to be over. If I could spend half the money and have this beautiful (albeit smaller) wedding in Italy, it might be better for my sanity in the long run. Of course, this is all contingent on an excellent wedding planner to help take away that stress. We originally were looking to get married in October, but if we do it in Italy I think May or June would be ideal.

dallastx2017 : no problem! I have somewhere in my email the other venues I looked at if you want me to message you them?
i just personally found this villa mentioned to be the most responsive and helpful, he put together a full wedding package proposal for the weekend (3 day event). Food and drink was the most important for us and in Italy you definitely get the best food and wine for much less! If you search the venue on Instagram you can see some newer photos of a wedding recently hosted there. It’s so beautiful and totally gutted now I look at the pictures that we didn’t have it there! We looked at April for the wedding and were advised the weather was too cool to have the wedding outdoors which put us off big time so another reason we decided to do it in the uk

flipsflops : Yes, I would love to see your other venues please! I just read four raving reviews on this villa for a weekend, and the owner sounds fantastic. I’m about ready to book my plane ticket, haha!

dallastx2017 : Yes it was my top choice! The owner was incredible in communication and the photos just look amazing… now I’m sad we didn’t have an italian wedding!
I’ve messaged you a list of the venues I enquired at. Hope it all goes well!

Wow. I just spent a solid 30 minutes on that site checking out the venue and it does look amazing. They did a great job on the renovations, and the food made me so damn hungry. I love how they said they grow their own produce, make their own honey and olive oil, etc. OP I hope you’ll keep us updated on whatever venue you choose. I’m so curious to check it out now. I love your vision!

if you keep researching destination weddings in Italy you’ll start to see the same wedding planner names pop up on threads.
Give a couple an email and see how quickly they get back to you with prices etc. If you don’t like their photographer or flowerist you can still find your own, the option is just there to make it as easy as possible for you.
I’m in the same position as you, struggling through planners and venues on the Amalfi Coast! Think we’ve found a good planner now, just need an affordable venue!!
Just remember, Italy never disappoints 🙂
