So, i am about 5’0 (although will be wearing substantial heels on the big day) and have hugely struggled when trying on dresses. I am a UK size 8 (US size 4??).
All the dresses have been so big on me and so long and just out of proportion so have found it really hard to see how things would actually look on me. Also in the UK they don’t really let you take photos and its hard to take a sneaky one so can’t show you any dresses i have tried on! 🙁
I have now decided i will get a dress made for me as most dresses i tried on are not made specifically for my height, just altered to death! In love with lace or tulle too but cant decide on style. I know my bridesmaids like me in mermaid/fishtail gowns but worried they may also make me look short??? Being a shorty i HATE being called cute/sweet. I want to look like a woman on my wedding day not a cute small girl! 🙂 Errr…. help??
I have eliminated ball gowns as they swamp me and actually make me look bigger than i am.
Anyway i wanted your opinions on the following dresses as these are the styles i am considering. If any of you petite brides have worn similar dresses please post pics (and height)! Any suggestions also welcome (with pics please if poss).
Below I only have pics of other people/models wearing the dresses, who are obviously taller than me, so will look much better!Thank you xxxxxx

If you’re going the custom route – I’d avoid anything with a lot of lace or embellishments – because you will likely be disappointed. The replica companies do a great job with the shape and general concept of a dress, but the difference is apparent in the expensive details like lace. I saw a replica of that first dress, and it was not what you’d probably hope for.
I would check out designs (or replicas) by Jenny Yoo, Nicole Miller, J Crew – etc.

Hi Mandypop, thanks for the advice… Although i am not getting a replica made… the above photos are just for inspiration 🙂
I am getting a lovely lady here in Dubai to design and make a bespoke, one of a kind dress for me… just want some advice for petite ladies on shapes and fabric really.
Out here many brides get their dresses custom made and designed and this woman has been doing this for over 30 years and will do all the measuring and fittings etc, so luckily i won’t have any concerns re finishing and fabric or embellishments xx

Oh my goodness that dress in the 5th picture (with the girl looking downwards and holding a bouquet) is gorgeous – where did you find it?!
I think that something in the style of the first dress would suit a petite frame – A-line with only a moderate flare. It would accentuate a small waist without having the ‘poof’ factor. I would also look for something in a sheath style (like the second-last dress you have there) because the way it hugs your silhouette wouldn’t add bulkiness / wouldn’t swalllow you up.
These are a couple that I quite liked, that I think would flatter your shape without being overwhelming:

Thank you, love your suggestions. I am so torn between styles to suit me and love all of those dresses silhouettes and features… hmmm i will probably end up with some sort of Frankenstein dress taking in elements of all!
The dress you are talking about is from pallas couture… gorgeous isn’t it??
