MissHockey:  Because the edges are curved, I would use a 10 inch cake. If you need a visual, cut out a 10 inch circle of cardboard and place it on the cake stand.

MissHockey:  10″ base, followed by 8″ middle tier, and 6″ top tier.

I would do a 10 – 8 – 6 cake (: My cake stand was 12″ too with curved sides and it worked perfectly. I suggested an 8 – 6 – 4 cake to my baker and he was really hesitant and said that the top teir would be really small. He was confident a 10″ cake would work and it did.

Here’s my cake/cake plate for reference:

A 10 inch base would work well, and if you’re concerned about the topper fitting on a 4″ top tier, I’d go with that option. But your baker also has a point about not being able to see as much of the cake stand. I guess it just depends on how much you want it to show. I personally would go with 10″-8″-6″ so that the cake doesn’t look too small like you said, and the design on the stand would still be beautiful just more subtle. You want your cake to be the focal point here.
