I realize this is not answering your question, but have you considered a lab diamond? If so I recommend looking around on Rare Carat. You can purchase a stone for a great deal and have your jeweler set it.

To partially answer your question, I would see if you can order one of each Moissanite to see in person in all different kinds of lighting. It may cost you a small amount to ship it back, but I have seen moissanites in person and they do perform differently. One of them looked fabulous under the jewelry store’s spotlights, but went pretty dead under normal indoor light. I’m sorry I can’t remember the manufacturer.

If you like the ethics of moissanite but want to avoid how moissanite looks, definitely look into lab diamonds. You’ll pay a bit more, but it’ll be a diamond. However, at the end of the day, what your boyfriend prefers isn’t really as important as what YOU want. It will be your ring, on your hand, potentially for the rest of your life.

I love my moissanite rings, but I specifically wanted the gemstone for its rainbow sparkles. I don’t want it to look diamond like. They are Charles & Colvard Forever One stones, and they’re disco balls.

The brand isn’t so much what you should worry about as the type of cut. Crushed ice or diamond hybrid cuts will give off less of a rainbow effect. Brilliant or hearts & arrows cuts maximize the colorful fire. Check Instagram and YouTube videos from vendors and cutters, and see what the different cuts look like under direct lighting and sunlight, and maybe have a jeweler source some stones so you can see moissanite in person before you make your decision.

here may be another option for you…

I have a NEO 8×6 colorless oval from Jhollywood. I had purchased other moissanites from her before. I contacted Jen as I was looking for an oval with no bow tie. I was extremely pleased with this stone.  I learned that their NEO moissanites are now being cut to minimize the rainbows and discoball effect. Compared to my older moissanite from her, there is a very big difference. In this stone the rainbows are very faint and delicate. It acts like the melee of diamonds in my setting.

I second the lab diamond comment, if you’re looking for something less disco-ball, yet ethical, that is the perfect stone…. however if you love the moissanite look than that is what you should go with and I feel like the crushed ice is a stunning choice.
