Okay, so after my months long hellish journey with picking a wedding dress, I’m down to two. I’m having my dress made by Jasmine’s Bridal shop and can’t decide on a few bits and bobs.
My base dress is Mori Lee 4528:
The other dress I’m in love with is Mori Lee 1657:
So far, the only elements I’m having taken from 1657 is this in terms of the back of the dress (This is what I’ve sent Jasmines):
Now comes the part where I’m stuck. I really love the waistline on the 1657, but my mother has been saying that because I recently gained weight I’m trying to lose, the 1657 dress will draw too much attention to my stomach and waist. I was thinking the opposite- that it will help suck me in more.
Any thoughts? To give you an idea of the weight I am right now, I’ve attached a somewhat recent photo of me. It was taken at 8am at a wedding dress sample sale- hence the grumpy look on my face.

I would go for the narrower waist (the one on the right in the picture.) It gives you one tiny point to draw the eye to – like an hourglass shape.

I said 1657.. Such a beautiful dress!

I think 4528 (first dress) will compliment your figure better. They are both stunning dresses, but I am agreeing with your moms thoughts on this one. The horizontal band at the waist will draw the eye to this area and it will (in my opinion) look far more flattering with a smaller band, i.e. first dress. The dress you have on in that picture looks beautiful on you too! The dress has to look right on the bride rather than just getting the best looking dress you can find. It must suit your figure too. I would go for the first dress if I were you. The lace looks so classy and the design is just beautiful. Best of luck with your choice!

I third the first one, for the same reasons. The dress should have boning to suck you in either way.

I believe the 1657 will be better for your waist line the bonning will go down lower and give you a nice waist line. The first dress will finish half way down the waist and not give you the support i know you are looking for. I understand where you are coming from.

I voted for Mori Lee 4528. Horizontal lines across the waist will always make you look larger than you are…

I think it could go either way, but I think your mom is right. That large waistband would cinch in the waist of a taller person, but you don’t look too tall (obviously idk for sure) and if there isn’t enough vertical space, it can just kind of squish you. I prefer the other waistband.

I have found that as a plus size person it actually looks much better on me to have a dropped waist! I was really worried about that when I first started looking, but anything with a “natural” waist made me look bigger than I was and longer/dropped waists hugged my curves and I looked much better!

I agree taht a dropped waist makes you look skinnier. The thickness of the material in that area will also help to hide your tummy if you are worried about that. And never underestimate shapewear! I love wearing a slimmer that goes up to the bra with shorts, no matter what size you are it helps you feel more comfortable 🙂

I have been trying on dresses like crazy too, and I think the first waistline would be better. I personally don’t want to be sucking in the whole time and want to be able to sit down comfortably at my own wedding. For those reasons, I am chosing something that sits at my natural waist instead of something lower. Even though you may like the ‘holds you in’ factor, I think the more narrow band gives a more feminine shape and will be easier to wear.

go the sweetheart neckline. and can you try on a dress with similar waist lines? they will give you an idea of what to do.
