I just recently bought my wedding dress, so now I have to start thinking about bridesmaid dresses. I’m planning on having two bridesmaids and a junior bridesmaid, and I want them to be involved in the process of choosing a dress. They have to pay for it and wear it, so I want it to be something they like and can wear again.
At the same time, however, they want a general idea of what to look for. I want something that will go along with the style of my dress so that we look coherent, but I don’t know where to start. Long or short? What type of material? What kinds of styles?
The wedding itself is going to be in the afternoon and pretty casual. It’s in a church, the recpetion will most likely be held in the church gym. The colors are purple and the theme is sort of vintage-y. We’re going to decorate the reception area with old books, lanterns, flowers, and candles. Kind of like this:
Help! Here’s a picture of my dress for reference:
Thank you for your help! I’m rather lost.

Wow! I love your dress.
Since it’s semi-formal and in June, I’d go with a knee-length sun dress. They could definately wear it again, whereas many bridesmaid dresses look like a bridesmaid dress and are never worn again. I have three hanging in my closet the brides thought were great ideas 🙁

Wow, so beautiful. I think you should do short bridesmaid dresses. Especially if you are planning on having your wedding in June. Some cute sandles or heels would look nice. Also what I am doing for my bridesmaids, all the girls are going to have the same color dress…the same styled top (strapless) but they can pick whatever bottom part of the dress they want..so one of my bridesmaids picked one with a ribbon on it…stuff like that! I liked the fact that I gave my bridesmaids freedom on what dress to pick, yet they all will clash and look good in the big picture in the end by the same top.

Thank you! I was leaning toward shorter dresses since it’s in June.
I guess I’m maily just worried about the fact that one of my bridesmaid is 6 foot tall, the other is 5’4″ and the third is nine years old. Haha. It makes it difficult to coordinate.

@KayBeeJay: the only way to know if a short one will work is to have them try them on. i have BM’s from 5’0″ to 5’9″ and had to go with a long dress. the only short dresses i liked didn’t have enough of a hem to let out to make them long enough for the 5’9″er. if you want to do short, and you can’t find one that can be let down enough (or let down at all), tea length is always an option. something light that floats away from the body.

@TwoStatesBride: That’s true, thanks! I’ll probably just have to take them to a bunch of stores to try some different options on.
