Okay so I had a phone interview today that went great! I need to send a follow up. I always feel like I don’t know what to say in them. WHy didn’t they teach us any of this in school? Here’s what I have so far. This is a very rough draft:
Dear Ms. HR Lady,
It was lovely speaking with you today. Thank you so much for the opportunity to interview with xxxxx. Talking with you today only deepened my interest in xxxxx and in the sales professional position. It’s the perfect fit for what I’m looking for and xxxxx remains my first choice of employers. I am so excited about coming in to meet you and the manager I would be reporting to on Monday. It would be an honor to be a part of such an outstanding company and to be in a position that so perfectly fits my skills. I look forward to speaking with you again soon.
So that brings me to part 2 of this two part post. This is what I plan on wearing. Should I button the top button? The reason I think unbuttoned is because I plan on wearing a necklace the is made by this company. What do you think? The have a strict business formal dress code. Anything you would change? Any help is much appreciated!

I think your outfit is fine! It would be a good idea to tailor your follow up letter though.. it sounds very cookie cutter. If you can mention specific things that the interviewer mentioned or that you brought up (“as we discussed, my experience flying planes for the past 5 years makes me very qualified for the fast paced environment you spoke of”.. that kind of thing). Any specifics you can bring up will look good, and shows that you actually put thought into it.

I think the outfit is perfect. It’s formal enough, but not too stuffy for the dress code you describe. I like the shirt as is, especially if the necklace you’ll be wearing is made by the company.
I think the letter is good – it is short and sweet, which I find that most people prefer. I have made minor adjustments to formalize/clean up your language a bit and switched some things around – hope you don’t mind! I sent out a bunch of these in my law school days!
Dear Ms. HR Lady,
Thank you so much for the opportunity to interview with xxxxx. I sincerely appreciated the time you took to speak with me today. Our conversation about blah blah blah only deepened my interest in xxxxx and in the available sales professional position. I believe xxxxx is a perfect fit for me, and it continues to be my first choice employer. I am looking forward to meeting with both you and manager’s name on Monday. It would truly be an honor to be a part of an outstanding company like xxxx. I look forward to speaking with you again soon.
