You can check out some of the featured wedding on Skye Blu photography’s blog.  She does a great job with South Asian weddings and I have 2 friends that used her for Indian weddings.

It’s going to be really important to coordinate with your bride and her family, because each family is likely to have some unique traditions.

As an Indian you should first find out if the wedding is Indian or Pakistani. Indian culture tends to be Hindu while Pakistani culture tends to be Islamic. However, this generalisation is based on the majority. There are other religions and so there could be different rituals.

The best thing to ask is what kind of wedding it will be (Christian, Hindu, Muslim, all of the above, none of the above). That way you can research the religious ceremony if there is any.

South asian wedding go for days sometimes. Check with the bride if she requires you to shoot her “mehendi” (day when she applies henna to her hands and feet) or any other family events. There is also normally a formal welcome from the bride’s parents to the groom’s side.

Like I said earlier you will get a better idea from asking the bride.

the regetis out of dc do a million south asian weddings.   This is their website.  http://www.regeti.net They have 2 or 3 in their online portfolio but most of them are on their blog.  Unfortunately they aren’t categorized as “south asian” so you will have to go through lots of blog pages to find them.

I definitely suggest sitting down with the bride and her family to discuss what kinds of photos they would like.  I would check out maharaniweddings.com and you can see all the different types of photos that can be taken at Muslim/Hindu wedding.

There are two sites that are just fabulous for South Asian traditions:

1. Maharaniweddings.com – a blog that I read all the time, and she has pics of all types of South Asian weddings.

2. Andrena Photography – found it on Maharaniweddings and she does amazing work and has tons of pics of indian/paki weddings!

Hi ianvillaceran,

This website was very helpful in helping me understand the hindu wedding rituals

Do you what your client’s cultural background is? The traditions can vary between different cultures.

The photographer I plan on hiring for my wedding is also inexperienced with Indian weddings, she’s only shot one prior, so when I meet with her I’ll go through the different ceremonies and list what moments I want her to capture.

You should see if you can do the same with your client.

No problem!

Another thing that might be helpful is to watch hindu wedding ceremonies on youtube – that’s what I’ve been doing.

This way you’ll see the sequence of events and the important aspects of a hindu ceremony.
