I am planning on having a ceremony and a cocktail reception to be held in a friend’s back yard. We are cooking all the food and will have rented tables and chairs. I want to have sort of a buffet line and will probably have fancy paper plates at the head of the line. there will be room for everyone to sit at once but people can sit any where they like and some may not even want to sit so I don’t want to make it too formal. Since it is only h’orderves and drinks should I set the tables with the tableware and napkins?

We had a buffet with hors d’oeurves as well. We set the tables with placemats and napkins and had wrapped cutlery and plates at the head of the line. That made it so the tables didn’t look bare, but people could grab what they needed from the line.

I’d put the prewrapped silverwear at the tab;es, so they don’t have to juggle that as well as food and drink. But I don’t think you need place settings.

@CassidyR: I agree. Or, since it’s a little bit less formal, you could put a basket or container on each table with the wrapped silverware in them. That way, it won’t look like there’s anything missing where the plate, etc. would be set.
