I would stick with something small and within your budget for the wedding party.

honestly, here is what I did, it is probably not any etiqutte or anything but that is sort of how it works around here lol ( i think i just made iowans sound like bumpkins)  We are having a destination wedding on a holiday weekend.  Most of our guests are coming on the friday before the saturday wedding.  I put a thing on my facebook (tacky but effective) asking if anyone would be interested in having a get together the night before, everyone pay their own way, very casual yet friendly (we are not having a formal reherasal) there was enough people for me to justify calling around to book space.  There is definitely no obligation for guests to come but all are welcome if they want. 🙂

@archer_bee:  This is my exact status that I put up on my facebook

“trying to take a poll here….those who are staying the 24th, the Friday before the wedding, would you like us to make a group reservation somewhere to eat Friday night or were you planning on dining on your own? Very casual, everyone pays for themselves sort of thing…”

no one took offense to it at all, or if they did they didnt say it.
