1) There are approximately one trillion Olivers out there, so it’s not as if this is a unique name you “stole” from the cousin; 2) You already had the name picked out, so if any one is a name thief, it’s actually the cousin; 3) Who cares? If the cousin is pissed, really and truly, who cares? Name your child what you want and move on with your lives.

I agree with PPs- No reason why you shouldn’t name your little one Oliver. If I were you, I’d just let your DH’s cousins know that you had it planned from before and you hope they’re OK with it, just as a nice gesture.

I like Owen, but if you love Oliver, use it!

I love the name Oliver, if my husband was in agreement, I’d use it if we have a boy! For you, with 2nd cousin also choosing it – I’d use it anyway.  I have a few good friends due before us, they know we’ve selected our names and if they choose te same one, so be it! Benjamin (Ben) is our boy choice.

I vote to still go with Oliver. Your husband’s second cousin’s baby is not close enough, in my opinion, to change the name. Although, I come from a family that is fraught with Marys and Anns, so everyone kind of has the same name in my family, haha. I definitely say go with Everett.

If you still need suggestions, though, Everett was one of my favorite names, but my SO shot it down. I like old school names, so my other choices for a boy have been Harrison, Sebastian, Gideon, and Jack.

What are your girl choices in case one baby is a girl, if you don’t mind me asking?

@MrsAMac:  Honestly, I’d still use it.  Maybe your family is super close or something, but I’ve met some of my second cousins once or twice, ever.  I wouldn’t think twice about using the same name as a second cousin’s kid.  It’s not like a sibling or something, those kids will likely never even be in the same room.

My cousin and aunt have the same name and no one said a thing!  What about Elijah? Or you said no to same letters.. hmm…  Benjamin? I do like Owen as well. 🙂

My DHs best friend used the name we picked (obviously its fair game since we’re not KU yet). And I think we’ll use the name (Amelia) as a middle name instead. So it’s still there, but not matching.  🙂

My nephew and son share the same name. Stick with Oliver.
