Try water beads.  You can get them in many differ colors or clear.  We used some for our head table, found clear ones at the dollar store.

What are your colors? How formal is your reception? If brown would work, you could do coffee beans. I did that for a bridal shower and everyone thought it was really cute. We did wildflowers stuck in them in orange and pink shades.
