vatoca1016:  You’ll be fine!  I also have a DH with an eingeering degree and it’s a wonderful thing!  I recomend that field of study to anyone who can hack it.

First of all, it sounds like you are very responsible and a planner, so I don’t think you’ll get yourself into trouble.  The first thing you’ll want to do is keep your re-occuring bills as low as possible.  The fist one on that list is rent.  $1000 to $1500/month is not cheap on a $56,000 salary.  I’d suggest getting a roommate to keep costs low.  Being married or coupled does not mean you can’t have a roommate or two and it goes a LONG way to keeping costs down.

After housing, see what you can do to minimize your transportation costs.  Maybe you can choose your housing so that you can be a one car (or no car!) family.  That saves a TON of money.

If you are stressing out about this now without much opportunity to really do anything, I’d start by checking out some personal finance blogs or books.  Money is not rocket science.  And if you are someone who can do some basic planning and keep your “want-itis” in check, you should do well.

We pay $1100 on rent and made little more than $46,000 last year (about 3k a month). It has gone up this year and will be about $52,000. We’re able to save plenty every month too, my husband is always surprised by how much I stick in savings monthly haha. So you’ll be fine if you budget well! Food costs can get out of hand real quick between groceries, eating out, and lunch money while at work.
