I was previously married and my boyfriend proposed with a ring that is almost identical. I took it at first as a bad sign. I told him what i had before. solitare round cut. I was dumb and told him that it reminds me of my last marriage because it looks the same and suggested a four prong, to change it slightly. He was furious and is pretty much breaking up with me. I told all this 5 days after he proposed. I said I loved the diamond..everything about the proposal..just that the ring is almost exact to my last one and I want to change it to a four prong. I dont know how to fix what i did. I should of washed those thoughts out of my mind. he spent the time to pick it out. He was proud of it. Now he thinks im a stuck up materialistic girl. And how could i say it reminds me of my ex..etc..HELP what should I do.

He should be understanding of this. Use the diamond but put it in a different setting.

Ew, I changed my engagement ring 10 days after I got it. Kept the diamond, got a different setting. My fiance was just happy I was happy and wanted me to have the ring of my dreams. He is my gem. You have to wear it the rest of your life, and I know from being divorced…nothing about the right marriage should remind you of your first marriage. I’m sure he’ll come around.

@reese123: I completely understand you. I wanted nothing to do with my first wedding set. I know he’s upset/hurt, but you’ve got to explain it further (very gently) and make him understand. He should be able to understand. It would suck to be forever thinking about how this ring reminds you of a failed marriage. You had a right to say something, I definitely would have.

Eep! When current Fi and I got engaged she was pointed out rings that were nearly identical to my previous wedding rings. I told her and thankfully she wanted to steer very far away from those options. She didn’t want anything to be anywhere near close to what I had the first time.
I would probably drop it for the time being though. If he is pretty bent out of shape about it, I think bringing it up will only make it worse. If he really does not want you to get a new setting, you might just have to deal with it.
