I think you will need to take your birth certificate if going to PR or USVI along with your drivers’ license.

We will be going on a cruise that will stop at both San Juan, PR and St. Thomas. Looking forward to both of those places!

Miami is prob. also a cheap flight for you in VA. I would sugggest flying into Miami, spending a weekend there adn then driving down to the keys, stay on Marathon isntead of Key West if oyu want to save some money but have a arental car so you can explore all of the keys.  San Diego will also have nice weather and you can prob. find a cheap flight on Soutwest is you are near one of their airports. Alternatively, have you looked into cruises, not sure if you would need a passport if there are Carribean stops but Travelzoo.com had great rates on winter cruises, particuarly if you are flexible with departure date.

Depending on where you are going, check southwest.com, especially going to Florida. They don’t go to Puerto Rico though. HUbs and I flew there for our honeymoon and cruised around the Caribbean, and our flight was about $800 total roundtrip for the both of us, the very end of October. We used Air Tran, and had an amazing experience with them.

We have been to San Juan twice, and LOVED touring Ft San Cristobal, not far from the port area. Also, I would double check to make sure that your gov ID is the only thing you need, they may require a  birth certificate at customs, so just make sure before you buy anything to go there

Key West is amazing 🙂 It is 4 hours from where I’m from and we love it down there.  If you fly into Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, it is about a 4 hour drive to the southernmost point Key West, but the drive is not your normal 4 hour drive.  It is beautiful with water surrounding you and so much to look at!

~~

Also, cruises that are “closed-loop” cruises (meaning they depart and return to/from the same port) which most cruises are, only require a birth certificate – even when going to ports like Cancun, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, anywhere…. so this could be an option for your honeymoon!  They are so much fun.

Quote…”U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same port in the U.S.) will be able to enter or depart the country with proof of citizenship, such as a government-issued birth certificate and laminated government issued picture ID, denoting photo, name and date of birth. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 will be able to present either an original, notarized or certified copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad issues by DOS, or Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.”
