My mom (who is also petite) had her dress custom made by the same person who is making my wedding dress. I didn’t want everything in our wedding to be matchy-matchy. My wedding colors are lavender/white with accents of brown & gold. I wanted contrasting like colors that fit the moment & that flattered everyone’s skin tone… (No sense in forcing an outfit that looks good on one person over the other). We decided we liked teal on my mom, and it looks great with her and the color swatches we used to compare it to…  the dress is knee length.

I am located in Orange County. PM me for the dress maker my mom is going through (but she doesn’t have the line of dresses on her website yet- she has smple dresses in the store). The dress maker is coming out with a line of mother of the brides outfits that are classy- but don’t leave the mom’s looking like grandmothers! Actually my mom looks pretty youthful in the dress. I am so glad she went that route. We were able to pick the color and type of fabric. =o) My sister lives in San Diego, so it isn’t so far of a drive if you took a mini field trip to the location, which is in Tustin.

My Mom has the same dilema. Is your Mom short as well? It seems all of the MOB dresses were made for Mom’s that used to be supermodels. We did end up finding a beautiful balero and dress combo. The dress is almost a sheath with a bit of an A-line cut to it and the balero is short cut. I think the cut of the balero is what makes her not look frumpy. It shows off her waist a little bit more than the other MOB dress jackets. This isn’t the exact dress, but close. Mom’s doesn’t have the layers that this dress has, but the balero is pretty much identical.

As for the color, my bridesmaids are in Plum.  Mom went for a dark purple and my Mother in law is doing the same.  I thought they were supposed to do different colors, but oh well…they both look great in their dresses.

My mom is not sure what she is going to be wearing, she still wants to wait till when the fall colors come out since my wedding is in October.  Has anyone else found it funny that all the models that are wearing MOB dresses usually look like they are about 30 years old.  My mom called some of the dresses "hoochie mama" dresses. She is very conservitive but hopefully I can get her to wear a little skin.  My colors are chocolate brown, rust orange, and light gold. I prefer that my mom wear some type of Gold or Greenish color, not sage green but not dark as Forest Green.  Well my Mother-In-Law who is 15 years younger than my mom decides to go out and buy a tight CHAMPAGNE color dress, well girls guess what color my dress is….. CHAMPAGNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I am going over to her house to see her dress, I just can’t believe out of all the colors out there she has to pick a champagne dress, freakin’ incredible.

My Future Mother-In-Law is wearing a great dress she says she got at David’s Bridal (but I can’t for the life of me find a picture of the thing!) in a very pretty pale yellow.  It’s somewhere between tea and floor length and sorta ruffle-y.  My mom is wearing a really cute knee length dress in an ivory and black floral print.  It looks great on her and she’s really comfortable in it.

Your mom DOES NOT have to match the BMs.  My Mother-In-Law thought that she did but they don’t, they really really don’t.  They MOB probably won’t be in a lot of pics with your maids so I don’t think they’ll risk clashing too too much.

My mother’s got great legs, so I’m pretty sure she’ll wear a LDB since our vow renewal is black tie optional. Some sort of basic cocktail dress with sleeves. What is it about moms and sleeveless? 🙂

Tell your mom to check Nordstrom’s online dress shop, but look at the "guest of wedding" section rather than the MOB section. They have a LOT of gorgeous, un-frumpy dresses, and very good sales.  Their in-store customer service is really really good. I tout nordstrom on the boards so much, people are going to think I work there (I don’t, I swear!!).

I think lavender and mint green would coordinate nicely.  Think of a purple/lavender lilac against green leaves- such a pretty color combo!

Chadwicks.com is another place to look besides Nordstroms.  Macy’s also has a lot of dresses online.

I have a petite mom too, she’s 5’1", and she usually finds dresses for weddings (including her MOB dress when I was previously engaged) at Talbots. They have a great petite section. She hates frumpy dresses and she found a gorgeus tea-length flowy (sp?) dress there that was beautiful on her. (I felt sooo bad she never got to wear it…ugh…she gave it to a girl from her work). But. yes, Talbots, or we also tend to do well at Lord & Taylor’s, Macy’s, and Ann Taylor, because they sell petite sizes that are well made. She’s a size 12 and not a skinny woman, (I am proud of my curves I got from her) but she finds dresses that fit nicely without being frumpy.
She doesn’t have to match the BM’s, lavender sounds really pretty with your Bridesmaid or Best Man colors…very complimentary.

My mom is eyeing a dress from White House Black Market.  She is changing it from a halter to have straps and is wearing a dressier black cardigan and brooch.  She really didn’t want to wear the traditional suit.  The dress will look great on her and coordinates with the wedding without looking like she’s trying to match the bridal party.  With your colors, I’m not sure White House Black Market will have something for your mom, but I would recommend checking some of the others mentioned (Macy’s, Ann Taylor, etc.).  Good luck!

@MyFavorite – YES! I totally forgot about WHBM – one of my mom’s favorite stores! If you live near an outlet center they do have WHBM outlet stores too!
